    International cell phone options

Just looking for some cell phone options for my daughter as she will be studying abroad with ISU and the Valencia, Spain program this summer for 6 weeks. We currently have Verizon and her current phone is not GSM network compatible and their international service is insanely expensive. What is the best way to go? Can I rent a GSM compatible phone for a decent price? Does it make more sense to just buy a cheap GSM compatible phone and then buy a country specific SIM card? Thanks for any ideas.

    Re: International cell phone options

I'm currently a peace corps volunteer serving in senegal. My family uses skype to call me on my cell phone here every week. It is by far the cheapest option that we have found. All you need is to download the software on your computer for free and your good to go. The rate here to west africa is about 20 cents a minute but I'm sure it's cheaper calling to europe. Best part is, if she has a computer as well then you can call computer to computer and it doesn't cost anyting. Additionally, if both computers have cameras you can do a video chat, which is also free.

She will have internet access while at school but we are not sure what kind of internet access she will have with her host family. She will still need some type of cell phone service while she is there if she wants to travel around Spain. Do you have a GSM phone and service?

    Re: International cell phone options

I just have a regular cell phone that I bought locally and use local service. My family uses skype and calls my phone on their computer. If she just bought a cheap phone over their you would be able to contact her on that phone using skype. But if she has internet access your better off doing it computer to computer because its free.

    Re: International cell phone options

I had a son who studied in Spain, and a daughter who is studying in Italy now. We use Skype too, by far the cheapest option, and easiest to use, if she has access to a computer. Both got phones to use locally, which seem like a good deal, but pay for minutes as you go, and make sure she turns in phone, if required when she leaves. My son didn't do this and was charged 500.00 for the phone! We did send it back, and the charge was greatly reduced, but don't remember how much it was in the end. Hope she has a great time. We just got back from visiting our daughter in Italy, and it was an awesome trip.

I will just echo what other people have said. My brother-in-law lives in Ireland and we talk with him using Skype and that works out well. He has a cell phone that he pays as he goes for emergency's.

    Re: International cell phone options

I studied for a semester in Caceres, Spain. I bought a phone there and lost it shortly after in a drunken stupor. I greatly enjoyed my time WITHOUT a phone.

Just buy the cheapest one there and pay for minutes as you go. Simple, and saves time trying to make plans 6000 miles away. Most likely the program directors over there will take everyone to the vodaphone within a couple days so everyone can get their bracelet, err... phone right away. This should be/have been covered in the program planning meetings ten times over.

I just got a touch pro 2 from sprint and it has international capabilities. And I am really enjoying the upgrades it has over the touch pro.

    Re: International cell phone options

I would not recommend a blackberry there, unless you want to sign a contract, the blackberry servers are different than the normal internet ones. I know this first hand.

With my US sim, I could send emails and bbm's for free (t mobile, check with your carrier). With the euro prepaid card, I could not use any of the blackberry services. I would of had to sign a long term contract for that.
