    Thunderstorms/warnings for 4/5

"Currently there is a warm front across the northern half of Missouri which will be lifting northward during the day and evening. Along this front will be an outbreak of severe storms. There have already been severe storms in NE Kansas and NW Missouri with 1-1 ½ inch hail. This will be the norm later this afternoon and over night in Iowa.

The NWS used the words “volatile mix and numerous hail storms” in the conference call that we just had. By 1:00 or 2:00 this afternoon we should see these storms firing up in southern and southwestern Iowa. A couple of small storms have already produced warnings in far south central Iowa. Super cell storms will be imbedded in this line of t-storms. With these storms, large hail will be likely in the golf ball size and the potential of tornadoes with some of those being very strong. With the super cell storms there will also be a strong wind threat upwards of 70 – 80 mph. One of the most dangerous portions of this is the threat that in our area, we could have these storms during and overnight which makes spotting and notification more difficult. Please make sure that the volume on your NOAA weather radio is at a level that you can hear it while you are sleeping just in case.

The other part of this system is the heavy rain. There is the potential of 1-2 inch rainfall amounts over a large portion of southern and central Iowa with localized 3 inch amounts over central Iowa as the warm front slows down over the Hwy 20 and 30 corridors. Flash Flood Watches/Warnings and T-Storm/Tornado Watches/Warnings are very likely later today.

we could have another round of severe weather early in the day and then again late afternoon. This will be similar to the same scenario as today but hopefully further south and east of our area. Over the two days we could see widespread 2-4 inch rainfalls with some locally heavier amounts. It is likely that with all of this rain, many of the rivers will push back out of their banks again."

Yep. We have had two different 4 or 5 minute stretches of very heavy rain and hail at my office in Urbandale so far.

    Re: Thunderstorms/warnings for 4/5

The storms currently in Iowa are all north of the warm front which is slowly heading northward. These storms are elevated in nature (surface-based storms tend to be stronger) due to the lack of surface instability. Current temperatures are still relatively mild and surface dewpoints are low. More instability and moisture will be heading northward throughout the day.

This first round of storms (north of the warm front) will be relatively mild, but will likely have small hail in them and brief heavy rain. These should move out of the area over the next few hours as the main event preps for this evening.

With higher instability, stronger surface-based thunderstorms will likely fire in the NE Kansas, SE Nebraska, SW Iowa, and NW Missouri area and head east/north along the warm front. These storms will be capable of very large hail, strong winds, and tornadoes. The amount and type of shear in the atmosphere combined with moderate instability near the front will allow for the possibility of very large hail and a few strong tornadoes. This front will continue moving slowly north into the overnight hours, with a continued threat of severe weather, including tornadoes. Training of storms could lead to heavy total rainfall amounts.

Again, these first storms are just the precursor to the main event this evening/tonight. The highest risk area will be in southern Iowa this evening, moving into central Iowa overnight.

Tomorrow should be interesting as well.

thanks to all in advance for all of the weather postings. I like being able to read stuff like this during the spring and summer in addition to watching the radar.

We'll see how KCCI handles this tonight with regards to interrupting the basketball game...that is always a fun topic.

KCCI usually does a pretty good job of trying to avoid interrupting as much as possible. Now if it was WHO.... Ed Wilson would be repeating himself over and over again while zooming in and out on radar for no apparent reason for the entire game. You might get to watch about 45 seconds of the game in total.
