    NCAA Finance piece on CBS

Anyone else see this 1/2 hour show with Seth Davis prior to the pre-game show yesterday. Very interesting. A few tidbits from the show:

NCAA has revenues of $700 million annually...$617 million comes from the CBS contract for the NCAA Tournament.

Roughly 1000 schools in all divisions with 400,000 student athletes. 24 schools are self sufficient and "in the black" (ie: athletic department pays its own way and does not need funds from outside sources...like state government).

96% of the money from the NCAA Tournament goes back to the member schools. 4% is used to pay for administrative expenses.

UTSA gets about $20,000 per year from the NCAA Tournament while Ohio State gets about $2 million from it (which as Gene Smith pointed out was a pretty small piece of their $120+ million budget).

    Very interesting show.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I'm calling BS on that revenue number. The NCAA has revenue in the billions. The problem is that they can hide a lot of things because its a "non-profit" organization. (I use the term "non-profit" very loosely here)

I don't think so, don't confuse the dollars individiual schools bring in from FB ticket sales, etc. with the dollars that go directly to the NCAA (CBS tourney dollars) and is distributed to its members.

CBS wants out of the current NCAA tourney contract because they cannot generate TV ad revenues to pay off the remaining dollars on the TV contract. I look for the tourney to be on ESPN next season with the joke that is the 96-team bracket.

Which will effectively kick the women's tourney to the curb.
