A 96 Team NCAA Tournament Seems Inevitable

Assuming that is the case, how often do you expect ISU MBB to be in the new and improved, bigger dance?

For me it is EVERY YEAR.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Definitely every year. There are seventy or so teams in the big six conferences. Out of the 96 teams in the dance I would venture to guess that 75-80% will come from those conferences. If we can't get into that field every year then all hope is lost.

I voted every year, but every once in a while you will have to totally rebuild. So id say id expect something like making it 4 out 5 years.

Re: A 96 Team NCAA Tournament Seems Inevitable

I think that the 96 team format is terrible. I hate the idea of having a team play 3 games in 6 days. Not to mention the fact that you are giving teams byes. 1 and 2 seeds will almost always make it to the sweet 16 now.

A 1 seed at worst would play the 16 in their first game followed by an 8 seed who would literally be exhausted by the end of the game. 3 games in 6 days is insane, especially after teams will have just gotten done with their conference tournaments.

Unfortunately, since it is all about the money. We will be seeing happen sooner rather than later.

Re: A 96 Team NCAA Tournament Seems Inevitable

Given that we made either the NIT or the NCAAs most years from 1984-2005, id say it should be an expectation to make it there. Will it always happen? No. But it should be an 'expectation'
    1984 NIT
    1985 NCAA
    1986 NCAA
    1987 No Postseason
    1988 NCAA
    1989 NCAA
    1990 No Postseason
    1991 No Postseason
    1992 NCAA
    1993 NCAA
1994 No Postseason (Orr's final year)
    1995 NCAA
    1996 NCAA
    1997 NCAA
1998 No Postseason (Floyd final year)
1999 No postseason (LE year 1)
    2000 NCAA
    2001 NCAA
    2002 No Postseason
    2003 NIT
    2004 NIT
    2005 NCAA
2006 No postseason (WM final year)

Well you have asked two different things. They should be in every year, so that is how I voted. But I don't expect them to be in it every year.

This is what it would look like......8 seed would have 1st rd bye as well.

Ok, so if the 8 seed is upset by the nine, then the 1 seed basically has a triple bye in the first week.

Not really. They would get a tired 9 seed in their second game but also the layoff may affect the top seeds as well??

Re: A 96 Team NCAA Tournament Seems Inevitable

We will still struggle to get in the field unless something drastically changes. I mean we couldn't make the NIT so I don't think we will make the tournament next year. YOu probably have to finish with a .500 record to be eligible. I love how they think it will help coaches keep their jobs. That doesn't make any sense because the standard will change with a bigger field and just making the tournament won't be as big of deal. Before a team would want a coach fired for not making NCAA's well now he can make the NCAA's but since it is expanded fans will just start getting mad because the coach can't get past the opening round.

Re: A 96 Team NCAA Tournament Seems Inevitable

Since we have not made either the NCAA or NIT in the past 5 years, it is pretty safe to assume we wouldn't have made the 96 team NCAA if it was in effect.

I'm not really understanding some of the logic here. We wouldn't have made it for the past 5 years, but we should expect to make it 4 or 5 years out of 5 in the future.

What layoff? They get a warm-up game on either Thursday/Friday or Saturday/Sunday (Depending on how it is set up). Then they get to play a team who they would've gotten to scout two games.

My only problem is the fact that teams get a bye. You are favoring the top 8 seeds in the tournament which is supposed to give all teams an equal footing. I don't have a problem with seeds and a 16 having to play a 1, it is going to super difficult for teams that have to play the play in games to make it to the sweet 16.

I would wager that fewer than 3 of the lower seeds get out of the round of 32. I would be that only 10 (at most) even make it to the round of 32.

Totally agree that it will be hard for the lower seeds and that is exactly what they want. They don't want Butler in the final four or any other smaller school . They want Duke, KU, UK, North Carolina and those schools playing because they get much bigger tv ratings.

The whole point of the seeding system for any tournament is to give the top seeds the advantage by playing the low seeds, if it was equal then why would it matter if you were a 1 or 16?

If a 9 seed upset an 8 seed, the 1 seed would have to beat a 9 seed to get to the sweet 16, EXACTLY the same as today.

the biggest drawback to this in my mind is that it will KILL the excitement of the first two days of the tourney (Thurs/Fri), because no teams with a chance of winning it all will be playing. Maybe that's made up for by two extra days of games during the week, but I don't think so. Those first two days are the absolute best part of the tourney, and I'm disappointed they are going to mess with them.
