    Future of the NIT

So I haven't been paying all that much attention to the 96-team tournament talk, but it sounds like it will probably happen. So what will happen to the NIT? Will it be disbanded? Will it be the new CBI?

At least ISU might make the tourney next year now...

Shoot, we might've had a chance to finally make the NIT if the NCAA takes all those fringe teams.

    Re: Future of the NIT

CBI and CIT become the new NIT and the NCAA becomes a combo of NCAA and NIT meshed together.

    Re: Future of the NIT

The NIT is just as historic as the NCAA tournament - it's actually older than the NCAA tournament (granted by only 1 year). I don't forsee it going away as it gives New York a chance to cash in on college basketball - even if it is Dayton beating UNC. I'll agree with RhoadsRage in that the CBI and CIT will most likely fold to add more teams into the NIT.

I could be wrong on this (as it would have been wayyy before my time) but wasn't there a time when the NIT was more prestigious than the NCAA?

Pretty sure you're right. I think at one time it actually determined the NC.

correct. if i recall right we made the final 4 before, but that was when the NIT was the bigger tourney.

    Re: Future of the NIT

    I'll repeat, dead.

We made the Final 4 during the WM era and it was a crappy tournament by that time. I had abuddy play two years in a row in the NIT final 4 @ MSG in the early 90s. It was crappy back then.

The NIT used to be owned and run by a group of schools in NYC and was used as a fundraiser for the schools.
A few years ago, the NCAA bought the NIT for a bunch of money, so the likelihood of the NIT surviving isn't very good if expansion to 96 happens.

True; the NIT had a lawsuit filed against the NCAA for some reason (I can't remember). The NCAA dealt with it by, essentially, buying the NIT from its organizers. This was sometime after 2000.

Since the NCAA now runs the NIT, most analysts have said that the NIT is gone if the NCAA's expands. I do not know, however, if the NCAA has confirmed that (probably won't until announcement of expanded tournament).
