Good place to get a used car

I am really, really inexperienced in this department. I have a little bit to spend (I'm guessing like 6-8k) and I've never bought a car from a dealership and I've never spent more than 1500 dollars for a car before. Obviously I'm looking to spend more than 1500 bucks for a car and I haven't bought one for 7 years or so. I just don't know where to find non garbage vehicles in that price range. I've been watching Craigslist and other places for months with no luck.

Are there some small dealerships in the area or anything I should take a look at or give a call to?

    Where do you live?

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

Re: Good place to get a used car

Here comes the best advice in buying a used car I could ever give anyone: You have to be able to walk out of the dealership and not buying the car even if you think you really want it. If you even hint at really liking the car the salesman already has you. You have to be able to act like you don't care if you get the car or not... that's how you are going to get the best price.

Re: Good place to get a used car

As a professional car salesman, I have a better idea. Why not be intelligent and do a little shopping online and pick out a few cars that interest you. Try www.cars.com as a place to do your shopping. Then try going to www.edmunds.com to see what a good deal on a particular car really is. Otherwise you are going to be clueless to a good deal when you see one. Some dealerships will drastically overprice a car in order to be able to show you a large discount. Others will price cars very close to what it actually takes to buy the car. If you do not do a little research you will not know the difference in dealerships nor individual cars. While you are at it, purchase a copy of Consumer Reports car guide so you know what might be reliable in that price range and what should be avoided. GOOD LUCK!

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

Re: Good place to get a used car

Ebay. We have three vehicles.....and all were bought on Ebay, from the state of Texas. Two of them I flew down and drove home. The other we shipped. I suggest if you get one for the right price, and can get some time off work....find a cheap one way ticket, take a day or two off..fly down and drive it home. Used cars in Texas not only haven't been exposed to the salt and cold temps we get....they must get inspected every year to get the current year registration. The one we had shipped was due to the time of year, and my wife did not want me to travel in the month of January. Well, it arrived during a snowstorm. When I went to pick it up at the Pilot truck stop on....I had a sneaky suspicion that the truck driver had been a little rough on the car. And maybe even took it for a joy ride(BMW Z4). After slip sliding the entire drive home thru eight inches of snow....we found both run flat rear tires were....flat. And both aluminum rims cracked. Hence my suspicion. Called down that afternoon to the dealer in Fort Worth....told him what happened...went on line and found two replacement rims...and three days later he had a check Fed Ex to me for cost. Now this is long and most likely a bit conviluted.....but the point is....I have had better luck with dealers a thousand plus miles away...than with dealers right outside my front door. That is why I recommend at least looking into Ebay.

I have been in the car industry my entire adult life and I agree 100% w/ this post. Cars.com and Autotrader are all you need to find a car. Look up pricing of similar vehicles in the area and go from there. Go to the dealership and take the car to a your mechanic. That way you know what issues may come up w/ the car and what issues it already has. Decide what your willing to pay for the car and offer it, they will either take it or leave it. Keep in mind that nobody is out to get you and there is no reason to be afraid of car salesmen :) When your buying a $1500 car the dealership wont make that huge of a difference so just find the car you want.

...couldn't it depend on who (and where) you are buying a car from?

Ummmm the goal of a car salesman is to make the most money on the car as possible... am I wrong in thinking that?

That may not maximize profits in the long run.

Let me add an addendum to that. The goal of a car salesman is to make the most money on the car as possible while still selling it. My point originally was that if the guy knows you are likely to purchase the car you aren't on average going to get as low of a price as he would give you if you didn't seem as interested yet he still was trying to make the sale.
