Not that US alcohol laws are very progressive. 20 year olds getting arrested for drinking beer isn't that much better

Of course what is getting left out here is that this lady was charged under the Islamic courts, since (I presume by her atire) she is muslim. Anyone else in the country is free to drink beer, hence why there was a bar in the hotel for her to drink it at, rather than an underground tavern serving bootleg whiskey

Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State,
and may her colors ever fly!!!

So a 20 year old getting in trouble for drinking isnt much better than being canned?! im assuming you would choose a fine over the canning any day of the week. Canning is insane. Having a drinking age is not insane. Effective? that could be argued, but not insane.

Of course, I would choose fine over canning.

But some states allow for 30 days in jail for underage drinking. 30 days in jail versus a couple of cans? I am not sure what I would choose.

Anyway, I was referring more to the criminilization of drinking by adults, rather than the punishment.

Which states put a 20 year old in jail for 30 days? First Ive heard of that. Are we talking first offense or repeated violations. Seems like a waste of jail space on first timers.

Ohio, for example ( Ohio Laws : Party Smart ) allows for 6 months in jail. There are several states, especially in the south that allow for 30 days or more. Of course, if you are a first time offender, it's unlikely you'll spend any jail time. But once in a while, it does happen.

But that the law even allows for such ridiculous sentences is ridiculous.

Me too. Bottles or kegs are the only way to go.

Actually though. I first read the title as canning. Which made a lot of sense to me on an ISU website. I thought that it was for underage students to can their own beer in pepsi cans or something.
