Best and worst times for Cyclone Nation...

My buddy and I at work are debating what the best and worst times are/were for Cyclone athletics. I don't know if anytime was tougher at ISU than the Walden years. I remember going to Jack Trice, with the games all starting at 1:00 and there was nobody there. The best times, for me, were probably A) the 2001 basketball team under LE and their move to the Elite 8 and B) McCarney's 1999 team that won the first bowl game in like forever.

Actually it was the 99-00 team that went to the elite 8 and the 2000 football team that won the insight.com bowl.

I would say those were the best years that I have been alive.

I agree on the Walden years, some pretty thin times on everything but mens basketball.

I'd say the worst was LE-gate when ISU was a national punchline. Best was the 99-00 period where FB won a bowl, MBB and WBB both won conference titles and conference tourney titles and the men went to the Elite 8.

99-00 was probably the best all-around couple years in recent ISU history.

The first half of the '02 fb season was pretty good starting 6-1 and reaching #9 in the country. Close loss to FSU in KC, comeback win over Iowa in kick-to-the-nuts fashion, beating Nebraska, and Seneca's run vs. TT. All down hill the second half though.

Worst single season I can remember was last year. Football team went 2-10, and the basketball team was awful and lost to the freaking South Dakota State JackRabbits in Hilton!

Re: Best and worst times for Cyclone Nation...

    1994 -

Winter - Loren Meyer gets hit by a train, and the second half of the 93/94 basketball season goes down the toilet.

Spring/Summer - Coach Jim Walden raises the hopes of Cyclone Nation with talk of the 22 - 5th year seniors returning for the 94 season, and a favorable schedule.

Fall - Walden burns a year of Troy Davis' eligibility by having him return kicks late in the season. Walden blames the ISUCF'V'MB for destroying the morale of his mighty team before losing to Oklahoma in Norman. Football team finishes 0-10-1.

For me this was easily the worst of times. Although, there was a silver lining in that it led to Walden's departure, and subsequently the arrival of Danny Mac.

Side note: I remember being home in Minnesota at a restaurant with the parents watching ESPN and the ticker at the bottom of the screen read "Iowa State hires McCarney" (or something to that effect). Having never heard of Dan McCarney, I naturally assumed we had hired Bill McCartney who had led Colorado to a share of the National Title a few years before. Much celebration ensued.

Re: Best and worst times for Cyclone Nation...

2003 was pretty brutal. Pete passed away in March, LE-gate happened in April, followed by a completely mangled coaching search. The Football team was destroyed in 10 straight games after starting 2-0, they were simply non-competitive. Even the women's team had a down year going 12-16. Not a good year.

As for the best year, hard to top 2000.

If you're really bored, back in the day I wrote a 3 part feature on the year 2000 for the former CycloneNation (ahh, the memories). It helps to relive some of the moments of a memorable year. I also have some really bad jokes mixed in.

    Scout.com: Cyclone Timeline - 2000 - Part 1 (part 1)

    Scout.com: Cyclone Timeline - 2000 Part Two - "Ten Daze" (part 2)

    Scout.com: Cyclone Timeline - 2000 - Part 3 (part 3)

totally agree. Worst time ever was when Pete passed away. I would exchange some of ISU best times to have Pete to still with us.

That 99-00 women's BB team also won the league tournament.

I really think this is the greatest year that the Cyclones will ever have.

Now about the Walden years, I know they were bad but the Jim Criner and Donnie Duncan year's weren't much better.

I don't recall it happening that way. I'm almost positive that Troy got a couple of carries in his very first game against UNI. Thus he didn't burn a redshirt late in the season. He didn't end up with many carries for the season, but that was because Calvin Branch and a couple other RB's were better suited for the triple option. In the end it didn't matter because Troy left Iowa State with an unused year of eligibility.
