    Spyware

Computer is infected with a virus and it is not allowing me to run Malwarebytes out of safe mode. Any help?

    Re: Spyware

If you have the same one I had you have to reset the computer and hit control alt delete repeatedly while it is loading up. Hopefully doing this will allow you to bring up the task manager before the virus loads. If you do get the task manager open you need to end the process of the virus which will allow you to run your spyware. If your spyware won't kill it you will have to repeat the process and do a system restore to a day when you didn't have the virus. It was wicked! The virus I had took over all other prgrams and wouldn't let me run them. It kep wanting me to pay for a ficticious spyware doctoring program.

    Re: Spyware

You can try downloading one of the Antivirus Live CDs and see if that will clean up the machine enough to let you boot to Windows and run other tools.

    Here's a few to consider:
13 Antivirus Rescue CDs Software Compared in Search For the Best Rescue Disk Raymond.CC Blog

I've used the BitDefender and F-Secure CDs on that list with some success. Your mileage may vary.

Had to do a system restore. That thing was pretty vicious. Thanks a lot.

HiJackThis. It's free and will clear your registry. You need to know what you're doing though.

    Re: Spyware

I had a virus like this on my laptop, eventually it killed it (the laptop). Now it doesnt make it past an error screen that reverts back to restarting my computer. Damn those people who put viruses in pirated files!

microsoft security essentials. Assuming you can install it in safe mode, you can do an offline update of the database and then run it even when the nasty removes your internet access.

    Re: Spyware

I've also heard that sometimes renaming the Malwarebytes executable can get around the virus blocking it.

I've had good luck with SpyZooka killing stuff even our supposedly sound work software can't.

I've restored my computer so many times that it has actually traveled into the future.

I use Spybot. I don't know if it's any better though.

some of the nasties out there are now staying resident even in safe mode and this particular one was apparently deleting the malwarebytes executable when he attempted to run it - it would likely do the same thing to spybot's executable.

Another option is to copy the mbam.exe file to something different (like tykeclone.exe) before it gets deleted - I have had some success (but not always) with this method.

    Re: Spyware

If you've got some malware that you're having a tough time getting rid of, even in safe mode, there is something you can try before a fresh install. Make yourself a bootable malware removal CD (or USB drive).
