    UNI and NIU

Does anybody know anything about how good they will be this year? I know UNI is usually tough, but didn't they lose quite a bite from last year?
I also work with one of the running back coaches from NIU and he feels that they have a legit shot at beating us this year. Is that wishful thinking on his part or do they really have a good shot at beating us? I really don't know anything about NIU, but I feel we should beat them by 2-3 touchdowns.

The Huskies went 7-6 (5-3), losing 27-3 to Southern Florida in the International Bowl. We'll probably win in a squeaker. They beat us in Dekalb back in 2003. Hiawatha Rutland's career was ended that day. I'm sure CPR will have the team fired up for a revenge game against the Panthers. Keep in mind they should have beaten the Hawkeyes last year in Iowa City.

You can't overlook anybody, NIU will be a tough game.

1st game of the year, it should be a good game.

That makes no sense. How can you expect us to beat them by 2-3 TDs without knowing anything about them?

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

I'm not going to get into the argument that they should have won last year in IC, but what does that have to do with this year and them coming to Ames?

UNI loses Pat Grace and 4 OL starters as well I think, they do have a stud RB that will only be a soph. They also lose Ruffin off the DL (their best player on that side of the ball) I'm not sure but I think they have all their secondary back. ISU should be able to put up some points on them and I don't think UNI will have the offensive fire power of years past to keep up so I think ISU will probably win by 14 to 17.

    Re: UNI and NIU

NIU definitely returns a lot of players. I think that they lose 2 OLs, 1 DE, 1 LB and 1 S. Looks like they are more of a running team than passing. They had 34 sacks, which was double what our D got. They lost to Wisconsin by 8 and beat a bad Purdue team before Hope turned them around a little. Ended the season on a losing streak, losing to Ohio, CMU and USF. Definitely not a pushover, but ISU should win by 10-14.

UNI, on the other hand, got gutted by graduation. They are in for a big time rebuilding year.

Notice in my post I said, I "feel" we should beat them, not "expect" to beat them. Feel =/= expect.

    Re: UNI and NIU

I expect UNI to be tough. It's their Super Bowl.

Seriously, like Melvin said, you can't overlook anyone. Farley is an excellent coach. Don't know a thing about NIU.

Will Cameron Bell start for NIU or do they have a RB coming back?

    Re: UNI and NIU

The NIU game scares me a bit. They're probably the toughest opponent we've played in an opening game in quite some time. I've seen a lot of people write this one down as an easy win, but I'm afraid those people are in for a surprise. I think this will be a nail-biter, and I would be shocked if ISU wins by more than ten.

From what I've heard is he isn't the best they have, but will get some carries. I guess they like to rotate 2-3 guys in at RB and spread the carries around.

    Re: UNI and NIU

Northern Iowa will be a hard test IMHO. They bring intensity to the game each time and show up to win. Zach Davis will be taking over as QB this year. He is a good player but in all honesty, he is a step down from their last two QB's

It scares me to. My understanding is that they are picked to win their division in the MAC in some publications. This game is no gimme by any stretch at all.

    Re: UNI and NIU

I dont have too much in depth knowledge of either team, only opinions from some close friends who are fans of each of them. From what I hear, yes UNI got hit with graduations last year, but they have a stable of athletes to reload with this year. Farley always does a great job in recruiting--I bet they'll be ready to go again in 2010.
As happy as I am that we have UNI in week 4 and not 1, I also know a lot of UNI fans feel the same way. Its a chance for them to work out some issues with inexperience and have a couple significant games under their belt before coming to Ames.
My opinion is we'll win both these games, but they'll be too close for comfort. ISU by < 10-14pts in each.

I think that NIU, ISU has a 7 point lead and tacks on a late FG or TD to win by 10-14.

UNI, I think that ISU will destroy. I believe that they have capable replacements at QB and RB (IMO their "backup" RB saw plenty of time and was better than the starter). But, to lose all five starters on the OL? That is disaster. They also lose a DE that could very well get drafted and both interior DLs. They lose 2 out of 3 LBs and 2 out of 3 WRs. Their secondary only loses one guy, so that should be solid enough, but IMO still not at the level it has been a few years ago. I think that they have some dangerous guys in Herring and Anderson, but with a whole new OL and an inexperienced (although not young or really undersized) DL, I don't know how much those two guys can hurt us. All this for a team that didn't even make the 1AA playoffs last season? I expect ISU to win this one by 3 TDs.
