Oregon offers job to Tubby Smith

Jeff Goodman is reporting that Oregon has offered their head coaching position to Tubby Smith. I assume that he'll take it.

The Ben Jacobson watch begins today.

I think Ben's buddy McD will tell him going to the "big show" is not all fun and games. The extra money is probably not worth the hate, just look at this site.

Stay at UNI and enjoy that job security. Life is not all about money, find happiness. Plus at UNI you are still in the top 1-2% in salaries in the state of Iowa, so you are not quite starving.

Few makes over a million and Altman makes about 900k and Altman has coached in the Big 12, he's comfortable now.

Or you succeed and are loved at a BCS school.

Personally, I think he should take a BCS offer...especially at a place like Minny. Sure he just got a 10 year contract. But that contract pays him $5 million over 10 years. Lickliter made $6 million in 3 years. Jake would probably get around $1.2 million per for 5-6 years. And if you succeed you can be making $1.5-$2.0 million for years and years. Monetarily it just makes sense to leave.

Obviously money isn't everything but coaching opportunities at BCS schools don't come around very often.

The argument is coaches like the challenge of coaching at a big school. Obviously, to some, the challenge isn't the most important factor...

Re: Oregon offers job to Tubby Smith

I really think Ben is going to stick around UNI for a while. But I guess I could be surprised.

I know that Tubby's wife wants out of the north, but I'm not sure Oregon fits that. I suppose money talks.

I like Tubby but i question them offering this much money to him, seems like there might be better coaches out there or atleast better fits in the west coast.

Re: Oregon offers job to Tubby Smith

I'd be surprised if Ben takes a job a week after signing the 10-year extension. I think he'll wait a year or two before leaving UNI.

I also don't think it's a given that Tubby takes the Oregon job. At this point in his career he seems pretty happy with the low stress environment in MN.

haha i would gladly triple my income for a couple of years even if the I may fail. Look at Steve Alford he seemed to bounce back just fine. There will always be colleges that need coaches so jump at money as soon as they throw it at you.

Re: Oregon offers job to Tubby Smith

If I were uni I would've put a 2-3 million dollar buyout for this year in the contract. It can go away after this year, but it is needed to insure their new investment in Ben.
