    Cubs trade Blanco

Didn't see that the Cubbies traded Andres Blanco.... I still kind of thought he'd be a nice player and some people on this board earlier thought he should be the starter at 2nd base.

Yeah, Blanco had some good potential but I really think the player to named later can make a difference right now.

Cubs are creating an excuse for losing this year...

Oops we traded the guy who should've been the starting 2nd basemen.

Wait, what? Do you really think Blanco should have been the starting 2nd baseman?

I think thise means that Castro is going to be on the big league roster sooner than anticipated.

    Re: Cubs trade Blanco

Cubs have a crowded infield and Blanco was out of options. If they don't make this move they risk losing him for nothing in return. Hopefully this means that the Cubs believe that Castro is close to being ready.

No not at all, but if he goes to Texas and excels and the cubs flounder, then boom...there you go built in excuse!

As a brewer fan, I really don't care. I think that the cubs are constantly over hyped due to their name and payroll. I think that they have overpaid for some players and have a bunch of guys who are getting up there in age.

This is most likely the case. Fontenot & Baker give you the LH/RH platoon option at 2nd, but both can step in at 3rd if Ramirez goes down. Fontenot has been playing a little at SS in case Theriot needs a day off, but I think the club expects that Castro will be ready to go at some point this season, so Blanco was expendable.

Since Blanco was out of options this is a no brainer to me. Either trade him or lose him.

Only an ignorant baseball fan would make that excuse...

That being said, i'm sure someone will manage to do that.

I honestly was never that impressed with him when I saw him in Des Moines. And if Augie Ojeda is Texas' second option wow. He my be a fan favorite but he is not that good.

    Re: Cubs trade Blanco

Blanco had a great glove but wasn't known for his hitting. Like it has already been said, he was out of options so Cubs had to get something for him now because he wasn't going to clear waivers. Hendry's statement basically verifies this:

"He was out of options; he couldn't go back to the minor leagues," Hendry said. "We felt like he wouldn't have gone through waivers and cleared, and even if he did, he would have been able to elect free agency, since he's been outrighted before. At least this way, we can get a player to be named later or cash considerations."

You over-estimate your fellow cubs fans if you don't think that that will be used as an excuse if Blanco flourishes
