No. 16 ISU Gymnasts Take Fourth at Big 12 Championship

LINCOLN, Neb.—The No. 16 Iowa State gymnastics team was far from its best and up against some of the stiffest competition in the nation Saturday in the Devany Center at the Big 12 Championship, and the Cyclones had to settle for a four-place finish. No. 2 Oklahoma won its third-straight conference title with a 197.175, No. 12 Nebraska finished in second with a team score of 196.625, No. 14 Missouri took third with a tally of 195.900 and ISU scored 194.850. ISU’s season record drops to 7-10/0-6 Big 12.

I remember having the ISU conference champs visit a WBB NCAA pep rally; then we lost KJ Kindler to OU. It hasn't been the same since. "Fourth" makes it sound better than it is - there are only four schools with teams. I never did hear what Kindler wanted to stay.

She just wanted air conditioning within the gymnastics area of Beyer. JP said no. I can't say that there wouldn't have been more demands as time went on, as KJ does have a huge ego. But our program is a shadow of what it used to be.
Also, this year she signed a gymnast out of Ames (and OU is one of the top three programs in the country), a girl whom ISU coach Ronayne didn't even recruit. ????

Kindler wanted a new practice facility and JP told her they couldn't afford to build her one. Steve Nunno retired from OU, and Kindler took the job. OU has the advantage of having both men's and women's gymnastics, so I'm sure they have a great facility.

I totally agree with this statement. As much as I want every program at Iowa State to be great the truth is we just don't have a big enough athletic budget to make this possible.

That's not true. I know KJ, and what triggered her exit. Ask any parent with Cardinal Gymnastics at the time. Pollard and KJ had agreed on plans for a new facility in the future. Not the immediate future either. Kindler understood the budget issues.
She gave up and agreed to talk to OU because Pollard would not air condition Beyer. Plain and simple.

I can't disagree, and I'm a huge KJ Kindler fan. If you look at the gymnastic powers, virually all of them (except maybe Utah), are at schools that are football powers, so they can absorb gymnastic losses more than ISU.
