    Spring Game Thoughts

Just got back from the game. Chilly day, even if the sun did come out a bit to warm things up.

Lemme just say that if that guy yelling from the Defense's sideline was Wayne Bolt, we've got a gem! I just loved how he was going bezerk after every play, good or bad. If it wasn't him, then at least someone is getting on our players!

This was the first time I've seen Arnaud in a "game day" situation, and color me impressed. He looks pretty good, and I would have complete faith in him to run the offense.

RJ Sumrall had a pretty good game, if only because Todd Blythe never played a down (none that I saw.). Still, he played great, and is a quickly rising star on our WR corps.

Was that Scales that had the 70 yard TD run off-tackle?? Pretty nice run...

I think that was Jason Harris. I was thinking it was Scales until he turned toward the crowd, and I thought I saw a 22 on his chest before he was swarmed by other players.

    Re: Spring Game Thoughts

It was Harris who had that run. I think the Offensive line looked like crap. Lee Tibbs was getting eaten alive by Parker and Taylor. Offensive line is our glaring weak spot. One thing I did like was Brandon Johnson pulling right and pulling left outside. That play seemed to work pretty well.

Another point: Can we please get rid of these delayed handoffs out of the gun? Mac proved they absolutely do not work, and with a terrible line they go from bad to worse.

Defense looked pretty solid, I thought the coverage was well-played.

    Kickoff coverage needs work. Badly.

Scales fumbled I believe in the third quarter. I'd like to see if it was actually ripped out or if he just fumbled it.

Overall analysis: Good showing, O-line needs work, but all in all I think the future is bright for the upcoming season.

Thanks for the updates, I wasn't able to make it...did we go with the Purdue style offense??? And if so, how'd it look?

    Re: Spring Game Thoughts

That was not our regular kick off coverage, it was made up mostly of walk-ons or "yellow hats".

The offense hardly showed anything, maybe 5 different plays at most, with the routes being run according to what the def. was giving them.

    Re: Spring Game Thoughts

The offensive line was absolutely pathetic. Later on in the game the starters were getting eaten alive by the likes of: Chase Hurtig, Patrick Neal, Bailey Johnson, and Nick Howe. It was bad.

On a good note, new 2nd string RT Ben Lamaak was dominating Travis Ferguson.

Also, Zac Sandvig was starting over Chris Singleton and Hunley was starting over James Smith. I did not see any of Drenard Williams.

    Re: Spring Game Thoughts

Can we play without an oline like Texas tech does when they spread out?

Nebraska has 10-11 oline recruits in last two years. So does Colorado. What say us?

In fact, Nebraska is loading up with 2008 commitments. Look at rivals. Are we late out the gate?

    Re: Spring Game Thoughts

I have to say overall I thought things were looking up. The team seemed pretty disciplined, and the new quarter back was looking pretty good. I know it's on another thread, but I'm hoping that Bylthe not playing was an indication of a lot off good stuff come. All in all, I'm looking forward to the fall! (And I don't want to take my face paint off now... )

    Re: Spring Game Thoughts

I don't know what you were watching but that was a much better showing from an OL standpoint than we've had in previous years with so-called NFL talent on the line. I was most pleased with the lack of negative plays that the offense had running the ball which has been very noticeable the past few years.
Having running plays out of shotgun is a necessity otherwise we become very tendencied. They may not work the best but every play is there for a reason and those running plays are to keep the defense honest.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

    Re: Spring Game Thoughts

I'll try to make this somewhat comprehensive. The first big difference this year was that it was not an actual game, pretty much just a practice. The 1st team O and D faced off, then on the next possession the 2nd team would face off. Special teams did not go all out or tackle, and the QB could not be tackled. The scoring was offense vs. defense and the method of scoring was somewhat foreign to me. The offense won 30 something to 20 something, but only scored two TD's and a field goal.

    Offense
Sets: We ran most of our plays out of a 3 wide, 1 back set. The QB was usually under center unless it was a 3rd and long.

Running Game: One thing that stuck out to me was that almost all of our running plays utilized a pulling lineman. Most were quite ineffective. Jason Harris did manage to break one, but that was about the extent of our running game. Scales started, but Johnson and Harris both took quite a few snaps with the first team. Scales turned it over once on a fumble.

Passing Game: Blythe didn't play for some reason. Hopefully its just because he's good and they wanted to look at others. Sumrall looked good and caught the one long touchdown pass from Meyer. It seemed like we either did a quick drop and got rid of it or went deep. Usually the line gave sufficient time to throw. Meyer underthrew a few and Arnaud overthrew a few. From watching warmups, Arnaud appear to have good fundamentals and a quicker release than Meyer. There were a few drops from people who's names I can't remember.

    Defense
Aside from two plays (the Harris and Sumrall TDs) the defense didn't give up much. I'm not sure if this is good or if our offense is just bad. One bad thing was that there was relatively little pressure on the QB most of the time. The CB's played right up on the line instead of 10 yards back, which was nice to see. Zach Sandvig also played most of the game with the first team, which rather surprised me.

    Special Teams
As mentioned, the special teams did not go 100%. Shaggy made his two extra points and a 35ish yard field goal. Kickoffs never made it to the endzone. Brandtner did fine.

    Re: Spring Game Thoughts

It was uneventful for the most part, yet fun.

Other than a flashy showing by Sumrall and a nice run by Harris, there wasn't much to the spring game. Garrin did open a few eyes though with a couple nice hits.

I expected just that, a player or two to stand out, yet for the most part vanilla play calling. Not one time did we see the "spread formation" we've been hearing about.

Many of those positions will change, especially on the offensive line and defensive secondary.

It was just good to tailgate, meet some CF'ers and see a little football.
