    They bought it because they can drive it silently to sneak up on you. It can go up to 94 mph.

    Good thing is its probably cheaper and burns less gas than most. They are probably not going to do any police chases or any "ramming" to end the chase with that thing though! Of course the Ames PD has had a pretty poor record of that anyway.

    I would think these could make some sense for police patrols that are mainly just on city streets and dont do as much highway driving. That gets the most improvement in mileage, and considering how many miles they probably cover in a year they probably recoup the cost difference between the prius and regular car a bit quicker than your average driver.

    When was the last time the Ames police were in a chase I wonder. The last area "chase" I remember was in Nevada when the cop pulled the murder suspect over while he was riding a bicyle. The suspect then proceeded to steal the cop car (somehow) and lead police on a chase.

    In that case, a slow cop car would be beneficial. Easier to catch once it's stolen.

    Good point on the mainly local streets thing. I cam curious if they can recoup the cost on it since they will trade it in in 5 years though. I think they would need to keep it longer to really see a benefit.
