    Michelob Dunkel Weisse

Has anybody tried this beer? I bought some on sale at Hyvee a few weeks back. It's a Dark Wheat Ale and I think it's extremely good. I had a taste, and went dang this is a Michelob?

It reminds me a lot of some of the German Wheat Beers I used to drink when I lived over there.

Beer threads are one of my favorite things about CF. They are informative and they unite everyone.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

I've had it before, it's pretty good. After going on the Boulevard tour in KC the other week I came across a few of their brews I really liked but unfortunately you can't find a lot of them in the Des Moines area.

I tried it but wasn't into the banana undertone of it. The rest of the flavor was very good. For me, fruit and beer never mix.

Some reason I think it said it on the bottle/box and I was like "ah, that's what that is". IIRC.

Your right. I looked and it says it has a banana and clove finish. Also noticed it's a German Style brew which is spot on. It reminds me much more of the German beers and not some of the British Ales I've had.

    Re: Michelob Dunkel Weisse

That is the German wheat yeast characteristic (banana and clove), if they haven't removed all of the yeast then as the beer ages the banana(esters) fades and the clove (phenols) becomes more apparent. It's a style I like as a summer beer, it's definitely not close to a light lager though if that's your only like or experience with beer. There are so many different styles of beer that I knew nothing about before five years ago, it's a shame that many people base their like or dislike of beer solely on light American lagers.

True, but I think those days are fading a little bit. Back in the 80's when I started drinking beer, about you only choice was light American Lagers. With the Microbrew revolution, we have so many more choices than we used to. I think the beer selection any more is every bit as good as what you'll find in Europe.

It's one of the reasons I've never got into brewing my own. You can buy a 6 pack of what ever you want and not worry about drinking gallons of your own beer before it goes bad or wasting a bad batch.

    Re: Michelob Dunkel Weisse

The banana was more pronounced than in other dunkels I've had. The first time I had some I really didn't like it, but I've had it since and I like it quite a bit more.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

I agree. I haven't drank the light American lagers in years and have no desire to go back. I try to grab a different six pack every month or two and rotate in with some of my regulars to get a new taste. Banana flavor is one thing that I'm not very fond of beyond in a banana. My favorite style is doppelbock.

I do like light American lagers, I just think that some people think that encompasses all that beer can be, which of course isn't the case. If they don't know but are willing to try different beers then great, it's just a shame when they don't give other styles a chance. Especially if they don't like light American lagers and won't drink any beer because of it. I do think this is less often the case than it was ten years ago, since there is much more readily available and advertised examples of other styles of beer now.

I am a big fan of most any bock style, there is a complex malt flavor that I really like. Doppelbocks are also my favorite of the bocks.

    Re: Michelob Dunkel Weisse

mmmmm beer. is this the unoffficial friday beer thread?

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than selfish and worry about my liver."
