UTEP's Barbeeto take Auburn job. Tim Floyd on short list to replace?

UTEP's Tony Barbee has accepted Auburn's head coaching job Wednesday, multiple sources told ESPN.com.
Barbee was one of at least four candidates interviewed for the position in Atlanta in the last two days. Barbee will replace the fired Jeff Lebo, who was let go after six seasons after failing to reach the NCAA tournament.
Barbee coached the Miners to the Conference USA regular-season title with a record of 15-1 and was named the conference coach of the year in his fourth season. Barbee (82-52) improved the Miners from 14 to 19 to 23 to 26 wins. The Miners lost the C-USA championship game to Houston and then fell as a No. 12 seed to No. 5 Butler in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Barbee was set to interview with DePaul later this week.
Barbee replaces Lebo, who got the East Carolina job last week, at a time when Auburn is upgrading its program with a brand new facility.
Barbee was coached by Kentucky coach John Calipari at UMass and now will go against his former mentor in the SEC. Barbee gives Calipari a former assistant in the league. Fellow rival Billy Donovan at Florida has two former assistants as head coaches in the SEC in John Pelphrey (Arkansas) and Anthony Grant (Alabama).
UTEP may look to former Miners assistant Tim Floyd, a former head coach at USC and a current New Orleans Hornets assistant, as well as former UTEP, Texas A&M and Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie and Sam Houston State's Bob Marlin. Arkansas assistant and former Arizona State head coach Rob Evans and Marquette assistant Tony Benford may also be in the mix.

Tim Floyd would win big at Utep IMO. Him and Larry in the same conference would be cool.

Wouldn't ISU be a better job than UTEP? If he was willing to take a job like UTEP, we'll always wonder if we missed out on the perfect opportunity to get him to come back here.

Wonder how quickly the Houston AD moves to go after Billy G. or could this be where he ends up?

How is this the perfect opportunity? Last time I checked, we don't have a vacancy.

ok...I guess you can believe whatever you want. The fact remains that in the real world, Iowa State does not have a vacancy, and therefore Tim Floyd is not passing up a perfect opportunity.

"I reject your reality, and substitute my own."

And the simple fact remains that our present coach is completely unable to get the job done. I was willing to embrace the idea that maybe ISU might have "turned a corner" with the win at K-State, IF after that game we could have kept the Texas game close. But McDermott proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the K-State win really and truly was a fluke by getting blown away by Texas.

We have a job opening, whether Pollard wants to admit it or not. About this time next year, we will have one in your "real world". And then, if Floyd does take the UTEP job, we will all question whether or not we (meaning Pollard) screwed up by not dumping our loser now and taking Floyd when we had the chance.

BTW, Bobby Douglas was WAY more successful than McDermott when he was dumped overboard.

I agree that next year will determine whether coach stays....

That's why we'd be MISSING the perfect opportunity. JP Wouldve been completely justified in creating that vacancy.

I doubt floyd to ISU would happen anyways... id be for it, but still would guess the chances would be slim anyways.

I doubt Floyd's wife would let it happen anyways... I'd be for it, but still would guess the chances of her letting Tim come back slim to nothing!

    Fixed it!

I appreciate the halcyon days of the Floyd era as much as the next guy, but past glory does not guarantee future success. An anti-Mac guy such as yourself, should be well aware of this.

What has Tim Floyd been up to since his departure from ISU that makes you think this is a perfect opportunity for us?

He was a complete failure as an NBA coach, and his tenure at USC was marred by scandal.

Take off the rose colored glasses.
