Better tell Nebraska to cancel their program.......... They can't be successful anymore because it isn't warm.

    Re: Article Re: ISU Baseball???

Great article but you're going to bring out the "bring back baseball even though we have no logical reasoning behind our whining baseball backers" again. I love baseball and can watch any game no matter what teams are involved. HOWEVER, the article states many of the main reasons why ISU shouldn't bring baseball back yet. I'd rather see millions of dollars pumped into basketball and football before we start spending money on baseball. As for the Nebraska argument, take a look at Big XII budgets and THAT'S why Nebraska is competitive. Give us their $$ and I'd have no problem bringing the baseball team back.

I read what he had to say until I came across this sentence:

    That's because are there none.
after that, I couldn't take him seriously.

    Re: Article Re: ISU Baseball???

Last year the final three in the Big 12 Tournament were Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska... Kansas and Missouri showed that it isn't money that matters, but the commitment to having successfull baseball. They went out and got great coaches who were tireless recruiters and pumped a little bit of money into modest stadiums.

Iowa State was headed in the right direction before the elimination. In 2001 the team had a better record against ranked foes than any other Men's Sport, 7-4. The returners would have included two people that went on to be All Americans in 2002 and three other All Conference preformers (at their new schools). Not to mention a recruiting class that has four current minor leaguers.

To say that Iowa State couldn't compete is a joke, it would just take work. Obviously something Mr. Nulph isn't familiar with based on his lack of research.

Then Nebraska must be sharing some of that $$$ with Creighton?
    Now it all makes sense.

    Re: Article Re: ISU Baseball???

One of my few regrets from my time at ISU as a student is that I never went to see a baseball game when I was a student. I think it was called off during my junior year - well of my my junior years.
With our budget being what it is I can understand not having it, but it sure would be nice if we had a peak in interest levels so that we could field a team that turned a small profit.

    Re: Article Re: ISU Baseball???

Two other things to think about:
    1) The article begins by complaining about the weather the last few days...I totally forgot that baseball teams dont travel and that there arent any early season tourneys in Texas/other southern states.
    2) How much different is baseball than softball? It must be alot easier to cancel/postpone/reschedule softball games than baseball. Also, apparently the softball teams can practice outside "November to February" when baseball teams cant.

    Re: Article Re: ISU Baseball???

The old ISU baseball field wasn't much, if any, better than an average Iowa high baseball school baseball facility. I know they have a much bigger budget, but Knebraska spent $10 million upgrading the baseball facility.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I would rather see Iowa State go DI in Hockey before we put a baseball team on the field again. I'm a baseball fan, but baseball didn't work at Iowa State because we weren't very competitive and I'm not sure we would be again. I also don't think we could committ the resources or draw the fans.

If ISU decides to fund another DI team lets play to win. I think we already have a good start on a Men's AND WOMEN's Hockey program. This wouldn't create a Title IX exposure.

    Re: Article Re: ISU Baseball???

OMG will this discussion never end?! Nobody ever went to games even when we did have a team. People like the idea of having a team, but all they would do is read about the team in the paper. There might be some people who have claimed they attended a game, or will attend a game, but the reality is about as many people would attend a baseball game as a women's tennis match. The support was never there when we did have a team. I will say however, the article is completely wrong about teams in the northern half of the US not being able to field good teams. ISU used to field decent teams.

Cap Timm Field isn't fancy, but it used to be a nice place to watch a baseball game -- next to the Arboretum, surrounded by trees, and looking out past the outfield toward the buildings of the dairy farm. I used to live by the field when I was a student, and watching games on a warm spring day was always a great way to relax and blow off studying. For those reasons alone, I wish ISU would bring back baseball.

As for whether we should go DI in baseball or hockey first... that's a tough call. Back when I was a student, there wasn't a better game-day atmosphere than inside that dumpy little old Ames Ice Arena for ISU club hockey games. If I had to choose, I guess I'd say hockey, but it's close...

I doubt the administration is looking to elevate the hockey program to DI status anytime soon, though. They know that the club hockey team has a nice little thing going without having to poor athletic department money into it. I remember signing a couple of petitions to turn hockey into a varsity sport when I was at ISU, but those efforts were totally ignored by the administration.

I went! ...but you're right, it's not like there was ever much of a crowd there. Still, there were more people at the baseball games than at the track and field or cross-country meets, and no one is clamoring to get rid of those sports.
