Would Bill Fennelly make a great men's basketball coach?

I was wondering what everyone thought. Asked him this question myself last summer (he has a cabin like 5 blocks from me in Clear Lake and he is friends with my uncle), but he sounded like he would not even consider it. After watching the game last night, he is a fundamentally sound coach. His players already do three things McDermott's players don't and thats rebound, hit free throws, and play defense. I think he would be a solid coach, he has "it".

It depends on weather or not he could get the recruits. That goes for alll womens coaches. If they could recruit they know the game of basketball so I am assuming they could win. If they don't recruit right they would be bad coaches.

Nobody but HB knows for sure. You pretty much know nothing....like Knownothing would like to say.

women's basketball and men's basketball, apples and oranges.

why don't you think you see even the best women's coaches offered jobs at mid majors or small mens programs?? on the contrary, I think lisa bluder is about the best coach the mens team at Iowa could muster right now!

If it was all just X's and O's...maybe. But I think, as you kind of see with McD, that personality plays a big role as well. BF, for whatever reason, is able to get women athletes to respond very well. I don't think it's even close to a given that this would translate to the men's game.

You have less "me first" players in women's ball. That's a whole different dimension to deal with.

Exactly. Now if BF had been dealing with a bunch of Andrea Riley-types his whole time here, maybe you could make that argument, but I think he's purposely kept those type of players out of his program.

His team is obviously mentally tougher than the mens team. I have never seen a practice but have heard he is a tough coach who is not afraid to get in the girls faces.

Larry did that and so did Floyd. For whatever reason, players would respond to that. Unfortunately, when the mens team would face some adversity they would rather hide from it rather than relish it.

FWIW- Last night was not a great example of solid rebounding, free throws, and defense unless you were watching UWGB. Especially in the first half.

Free throws %-below our season average
Rebounding- Rebounds were equal and considering our height advantage that is amazing
Shooting %- UWGB shot much better than we did. Their first half shooting was sick 50% from the field and 40% from 3 pt. doesn;t say much for our defense.
Defense- UWGB was in the game due to their great defense

The good thing is that is not the norm and there is no doubt Bill is a great coach. I have heard Bill say he doesn't think his coaching would translate to the men's game. Too many egos to deal with and the men would not react to his coaching as well as the women. His words not mine.

Bill F is a great coach though. there is no doubt about that. What he did with this year's team is amzing. The youth and the growth has been fun to see.

Even if you get the recruits, you have to manage the egos.

Re: Would Bill Fennelly make a great men's basketball coach?

YES HE WOULD. If he got a good recruiting coach he would be a heck of a coach. Even if he had a few players leave i bet you anything it wouldn't come near to the players mac has lost. BF would coach his players to be a better person on and off the court. He would get the best out of them and he would have his players play for this university and not the name on the back of their shirts. To me he has the mentality of LE and would love to bring that back.

Well our mens basketball team is so soft that yes he probably would beable to coach them.

A womens coach would never be able to transition over. That's just the reality of today's culture.

If you could just supplant him in a mens coaching role minus the stigmas.. .yeah he obviously would do well.

Our women are a lot tougher than our men. The guys would start crying and quit the second BF got in their face.
