What UNI's wins mean in $$$

Pretty good article in the DM Reg about the value of UNI's NCAA run, especially with the Regents asking that state dollars not support university athletics.

Also, some eye-opening numbers from 2008-2009:

UNI men's bb expenses: $1.5 mil
UNI men's bb revenue: $1.9 mil

KU men's bb expenses: $8.2 mil
KU men's bb revenue: $15.7 mil

Mich St. men's bb expenses: $9 mil
Mich St. men's bb revenue: $15.5 mil

Big tournament runs like this can really help out the smaller schools. In 2008 when Fresno State won the College World Series the sponsorships that came in was unbelievable for them.

Re: What UNI's wins mean in $$$

They barely make money on it and Title IX is part of the problem.

ISU also has similar issues, but not quite as dramatic as UNI.

Should the state subsidize college athletics? I can understand ISU and UNI's case that it's good for the general community, but what about all the private colleges who don't get a dime?

Does Title IX apply to all NCAA universities, or just public universities?

I believe all or those which receive federal funding.

UNI now receives $4.6 million in taxpayer money annually to help run the athletics department. That represents a big chunk of its $11.5 million budget. (40%)

I don't know how they can sustain their Department without that money.

They receive $4.6 million from the general fund at the school. The State does not supply all of that money. Not sure what the % is at UNI but at ISU the state pays about 40% of the general fund

I wish they would name this regent...I would like to find them and have a word.

    It was Michael Gartner.

There's not a lot of other options out there for UNI when they're going to be asked to cut 40% from their budget. Obviously, their wrestling team is done. They're going to want to keep their basketball, volleyball and t&f teams viable. If they want to keep FB at the current 65 scholarships, that would mean the end of wrestling, men's golf, possibly women's swimming and tennis. But does cutting those four sports amount to $4M? I doubt it. And would it take them below the limit for participation in the MVC? Maybe nonscholarship FB is the only answer.

    Sucks for them.

    It was Michael Gartner.

Does anyone know the details of the sweetheart rent deal the Gartner owned I-Cubs have playing in Principal Park? The taxpayers of Des Moines built a nice stadium and I remember seeing once that the I-Cubs pay next to nothing in rent.

A big part of UNI and ISU's athletic budget goes towards scholarships of many Iowa kids, whereas the I-Cubs main mission is to develop players for Chicago.

This is not a bash on the I-Cubs, I think they are one of the better things going on in Des Moines. It just seems a little hypocritical of Mr. Gartner.

I think it's pretty simple. If a given team makes money, they shouldn't be counted against title IX.

Maybe they should try not being private colleges if they want public money?

You can't die. That would upset the equilibrium in the Cave.
