Why aren't we in the NIT?

I can't find a thread about us and the NIT. Were we not invited? Did we not want to go?

I think it would have been good for the team/program to have some post-season beyond the Big 12 tournament.

It doesn't seem like we are "above" it, considering that North Carolina, Connecticut, and Illinois are in it. There is only one Big 12 team (Texas Tech), plenty of lesser teams (Troy, Coastal Carolina, Jacksonville), and some New England teams apparently to draw a regional crowd.

I seem to remember something around the end of the Wayne Morgan era when we made clear that we didn't want to go. Perhaps we are still paying for that posture.

    Because we weren't good enough?

I think it was determined that the Cyclone team didn't deserve to go with a losing record. I agree.

Re: Why aren't we in the NIT?

    1. We didn't get invited.
    2. We weren't even eligible because we finished below .500.

All of those "lesser" teams as you referred to them were likely automatic qualifiers for winning their regular season conference championships.

Re: Why aren't we in the NIT?

So, are there actual standards? Or is it a true invitational?

I don't think anyone in the NIT has a losing record, but teams like Weber State have records of 20-10 with this listed on the collegesportsfans website: "Big Wins: 12/22 vs Morehead State (66-64), 1/2 Montana (64-56), 2/13 Northern Colorado (81-76). Bad Losses: 11/22 at Seattle (87-91), 1/7 at Northern Colorado (75-84), 2/28 at Portland State (79-84)." This hardly seems comparable to a ton of good games (aka terribly painful losses) in the Big 12.

Don't most conference tournament champions go to the NCAA tournament?

Yes, there are standards. We won 4 conference game and lost in the first round of our conference tournament. We needed to win three to be eligible. I don't even know if that would have done it.

Re: Why aren't we in the NIT?

I believe it's not conference tourney winners, it's teams that won their conference regular season and then lost the auto invite in the conference tourney. You have to have a .500 record to be invited to any postseason tournament I believe.

Weber St. won the Big Sky so they are an automatic qualifier.

Re: Why aren't we in the NIT?

I found an old (2006) rivals.com article about changes to the NIT:

"All regular-season conference champions not in the NCAA tournament field will be guaranteed a berth in the National Invitation Tournament, and teams no longer have to have .500 records to be selected for the NIT's 40-team field."

Re: Why aren't we in the NIT?

Because we sucked (ie. under .500)

Regular Season champions who do not win their conference tournaments automatically qualify for the NIT...this is not that difficult.

We didn't have enough players. Dorr might have played 30 minutes.

Re: Why aren't we in the NIT?

Here is what I found on Wikipedia:

National Invitation Tournament - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NCAA announced a revamped selection process starting with the 2006 tournament. The main highlights are:
    • Teams are no longer required to have .500 or greater records to receive bids. Even with this change, however, all teams receiving invitations for the NIT, with the exception of North Carolina in 2010, have had a record greater than .500.
    • Similar to the automatic bids the NCAA Tournament grants for all conference tournament champions, all teams that won regular-season conference championships but failed to earn NCAA tournament bids are guaranteed places in the NIT.
In addition, the selection process has been made transparent. ESPN no longer had a hand in the selection of the teams. Instead, a committee of former NCAA head coaches, chaired by Newton, and including Gene Keady (Purdue), Don DeVoe (Tennessee), Rudy Davalos, Les Robinson (NC State), Reggie Minton (Air Force), John Powers and Carroll Williams among others, prepared a list of potential teams in advance. The seeding and balancing process is similar to that of the NCAA tournament, with the exception that higher seeded teams will always host games, unless extenuating circumstances occur. In the past, higher seeded mid-major teams would often be forced to travel to play less highly regarded major conference teams that would be likely to sell more tickets to the game.

Don't you have enough places on this forum to vent?

Despite the disappointment of this season, we were only a few plays away from a much better record.
