    I hate to admit it

But with 5 of 7 Big 12 teams getting washed out this week-end, and our conference champ getting beat by the Mo Valley champ for the first time in memory, we were over-rated this year. Even the lowly Big 10 is doing better, and that really hurts. It's up to K-State and Baylor to salvage us a little pride.

The NCAA tournament has as much to do with luck than it does with being good or bad.

Re: I hate to admit it

I fail to see how losing games in the basketball anomaly that is the NCAA tournament gauges the strength of a conference. The big12 earned their 7 teams, and were seeded accordingly. Let us pretend that A&M beats Purdue in OT. This in no way proves that the big12 was stronger than the big10. The Big East has taken a beating as well, yet this in no way indicates how tough a conference is.

Please, somebody explain to me why the NCAA tournament should be used to determine the strength of a conference.

IMO its about creating an effective game plan to exploit an opponents weaknesses and execute that game plan. If a team does that, and sticks to their plan, they can beat anyone. See: UNI, St. Marys and Cornell.

Re: I hate to admit it

The tourney is a pretty precarious way to name a champ. In bball there are so many things that can be off on a given night that a team like UNI beats KS. They want to expand the field to more than 64 teams; however, if anything, to make a champ more accurate, they should reduce the field.

That said, the excitement the tourney brings...it would be a shame to alter it too much.

Re: I hate to admit it

I'm not saying the NCAA and bowl season is the only criteria for determining the strength of conferences, but let's face it, when the Big 12 does well in the NCAA or bowl season we're quick (or at least I am) to point to that as confirmation of how good our conference is. The sportwriters and talking heads (and fans) talk about it and keep track of the conference records as saying something about the strength of that conference. The last 2 months before the NCAA tourney the conference teams are playing each other almost exclusively, so hard to tell just how good the teams are until they play good independents and teams from other conferences where the talk ends and results are counted on the playing field. We've been bragging (including myself) about how good the Big 12 is with some even saying it's the best conference in the country, with others saying the Big East is. That's fun, but it's just talk and when conferences play each other in the NCAA those are concrete results, not opinions. All I'm saying is it's a big factor in determining who really had the best conference, and I think most fans would agree with that, otherwise why does everybody keep track of the records. Our 7-5 is ok so far, but not indicative of being the best conference, and neither is the Big east. I hate to say it but what's the Big 10, about 7-2 I think. One of their best teams (Purdue) beat one of our best teams without their best player. Right now I'm having to eat crow with my Iowa friends because I've been pumping up the Big 12 and slamming the Big 10 all year. What can I say to them now that doesn't sound like a lame excuse?

I don't think the tourney is a good indicator of the Big 12's strength this season.
Now, if the Big 10 was sucking it up, I'd change my opinion on that.

The NCAA tournament is at least as valuable as bowl games for determining conference strengths.

Re: I hate to admit it

Well i feel oklahoma state, missouri and texas a&m got a crappy deal. Its understandable that those three teams were not going to make it to the sweet 16. Kansas lost against a uni team that outplayed them and wanted it more thats what you get in the ncaa tourny. Texas wasnt going to beat kentucky if they had a shot. So in reality i had three big 12 teams in my sweet 16 with kansas. I feel that baylor and k-state SHOULD make it to the elite eight atleast. Then the big 12 will be looking much better.
