Whatever the guy does he is wrong. There are no HS prospects left, what is he to do next year. We want him to win now so what else can he do? I have no problem with JUCOs. ISU has won in the past with them and Mac has done a better job evulating them than HS players.

That was a very insightful and indepth analysis

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Agree, no depth from high school players. Next year will look like MCD's first year, still doesn't have his own base of recruits.

It's late night Friday night. March Madness is on.

I think I'll complain that we recruit too many JUCO kids. That ought to say enough right there.

Wrong the best part is they cannot transfer to any other DI school.

Well, his back is up against the wall... I'm not to sure how many 12th graders out there are ready to play some Big 12 basketball and contribute immediately. Especially any that are beating the door down to come and play ball at Iowa State. I'm not saying that GMAC needs to turn the team into a Juco farm. But right now he needs something, and something quick! And no matter what talent he gets, it's going to have some experience 1st.

    Right.
If the OP had said, "This is a make or break year for Mac, and he's filling us with JUCOs instead of recruiting a foundation of young players," they'd have an interesting argument, and we could discuss the potential for massive player turnover under the next coach. That could be a real concern if next year doesn't go well, as in tournament well.

Ideally you would love 5 star high school kids. Reality is different though.

We have Raily and Ejim as HS kids. We have (hopefully) Wilkins as a 3 year juco. And we have Phillips as a regular Juco.

I like what you did there, went with the bold, yet non-descript statement. It was concise, yet oh so expansive with the endless directions this conversaition could go in. Sure, you could have offered some type of theory or factual basis, but in its simplicity, you have shown your true basketball genious. This post, sir, was a piece of art.

The words "concise, yet oh so expansive" remind me of Kottman's phrase "expansive yet concise." Did you take history classes from him?

That is what's frustrating. There's not much analysis needed, really, because the problem is painfully obvious to everyone with a set of eyes and clear mental capacity.

As you stated, we're heading into year 5 and we still don't have a solid base of talent from which to build. We're looking at (at least) 3 new starters, and not because we graduated a bunch from a successful team.

There was a lot of talk a few years ago about how McDermott was going to do this the "right way" and go after a solid base of 4-year talent. It was going to cost us in the short-term, but we would benefit in the following years when they were all juniors and seniors.

Here we are after 4 seasons, and Mac is scrambling to pick up a bunch of JUCOs late in the game. One of the things that excited me the most about the McDermott hiring was the thought that he would bring stability to the program. *shudders*

It's hard to get excited about the recruiting process at this point.

I'm with you. Had the OP been worded like this, it wouldn't have inspired as much immediate sarcasm. It doesn't always work this way, but a well-reasoned post has a better chance than the fly-by few words thing.

It's obvious to most that it's a problem, but it's handy to explain what the problem can be.

I think we just might be sitting on a whole mass of instability regarding player turnover that could be worse than what we've seen to date with all this JUCO stuff, and the prospect of a coaching change next year.
