    Water shut-off sidewalk

I don't know what it's called but out on our sidewalk we have the round thing that will shut off your water. This winter it looks like it's raised up a little and could cause someone to trip. My neighbor had the same issue and he just drove over it with the car and it went down. It worked but I can't think this is the best method. Any ideas?

Take a closer look around the sidewalk. Are you sure the sidewalk didn't settle? If it did you may want to mud jack it.

Just pound it down. They are built with the ability to be hamered back down. If you call the utility company they will come out and do it for you usuall (sometimes it will cost you money though).

    Re: Water shut-off sidewalk

Had a neighbor who had one sticking up too high and he want and talked to the city. SOmeone there told him he could hit it with a sledgehammer to pound it down. I think it is just a hexagon shaped end of pipe that goes into a slightly larger hexagon shaped end pipe so the one turns the other but they overlap enough that they can be pushed down with damaging anything.

Its the water turnoff for your house. If you don't pay your bill, they come out and turn that to shut down the supply.

That did it. About 4 swipes with the sledge. I should have done it about 3 months ago instead of always avoiding it with the snowblower.

It's official name is a curb box. I know it isn't a box and its not on the curb so I don't know why it's called that. "I know nothing I am simply the messenger."

The concrete moves with the changing temps, that probably caused it. Will happen again im sure.

Don't just start wacking on it. It will go down with a mallet and a block of wood.
