    Good news on John Wilkins

I just got off the phone with John's JUCO coach and former ISU assistant (for 7 years) Terry Carroll.

Carroll explained to me that John "isn't like most JUCO's."

The only reason that he went the JUCO route was because of the clearinghouse issue. Carroll said that he's skilled enough to be a D-1 player now and that he's a "good student that knows three languages."

I'll post the entire interview later today. Made me feel better about the JUCO tag though.

I am really excited about this guy. Other than the 5 games that he has to sit next year, I think that he will be an exciting player.

He will help resurrect Hilton Magic

Good news indeed, Chris. Hopefully he can step in once Big XII play starts and provide some help with scoring.

Care to guess the three languages?

I'll say English, French, and Klingon.

Chris, it sounds like John and his Coach think he could get another year of eligibility. Explain the situation. As i understand it he was only at Bradley for a spring semester and then went to Juco.

Hopefully its French, English and Rebounding, because we will need alot of that out of him next year.

Basically like he redshirted this year, but they don't know if it counts toward eligibilty.

Essentially, it was like he redshirted at Bradley. Then, he got Lucca's this last year by the NJCAA...the question is, does him sitting out last year in a JUCO take away a year of eligibility for the NCAA or not? Very confusing. I'd bank on him getting 3 years.

His 5 year clock would have started his first semester at Bradley. So he'd need a waiver to play a 6th year, but unlike Gilstrap he sat out because he was ruled ineligible, not because he was injured. Also unlike Gilstrap he was in school the whole time.

    But I don't think it's very likely he'd get a 6th year.

Yeah, probably not likely, I would argue though that the shouldn't make him sit out five games since he sat out all of last year. The NCAA is a joke. I can understand not giving GIlstrap an extra year. But kids like Lucca and Wilkins who essentially did nothing wrong get punished.

Re: Good news on John Wilkins

I honestly hope he's all that, because we're going to need all the help we can get next season.

I don't mean to sound like a gigantic D-bag, but I guess of late I'm just wary of the "D-I caliber" tag. We've had lots of "D-I caliber" players pass through here the last 4 years. The problem is there are 320-some D-I teams in 30-some D-I conferences, which means there are nearly 4000 players playing D-I ball, most of whom will never have even a prayer of sniffing the NCAA Tourney. What that means it's not just enough to be D-I caliber, especially at ISU's level - we need Big 12 caliber players if we're going to compete anytime soon. Hopefully he's that kind of player, because if he's not, then for all I know him being a "D-I caliber" player could mean he might be good enough to play somewhere like Grand Valley State...

Re: Good news on John Wilkins

Outstanding news. I know it's a really simplified way of looking at things but it's hard to get excited about a bunch of guys we're bringing in from JUCOs. Not that they can't work.

Glad to hear Wilkins is legit.

Out of curiosity, did Carroll confirm that Wilkins has, in fact, committed? According to Paul Clark, Carroll was unaware of a commitment earlier this morning...
