Do the up and coming coaches that we could hire want to come here or do they not want to get themselves into this mess?

Re: Would up and coming coaches want to come here?

I think that it will be interesting to see who ISU goes after when we get rid of GMac. Unless there is a miracle next year and we actually have success (ie Post-season) I think that GMac goes because fan support will be dwindling.

On one hand you need sort of a big splash if you are JP because if this hire fails then JP goes with him because his track record for hiring coaches has not been stellar.

On the other hand with a $1-2 million buyout the budget can only stand so much especially with plans to improve J Trice.

The trick will be to find someone that will create a buzz while not breaking the bank and overtime can develope and retain players that can compete in the Big XII.

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”

I would rather take an assistant from a top level program than another mid-major head coach.

Some people have mentioned "would coaches want to come here?" -- which is a fair question from the aspect of $ and the program's national profile (that is, if someone could get more money to coach at a longtime power, they might not consider it).

As far as the "mess" —*I guess a coach might read GMac's failure as being something larger than the coaching position; they think, "he's had success before, but hasn't won there — must be something about ISU that's limiting and I don't want to test those waters."

But they should realize four coaches over 25 years had a good level of success, on the whole. So it's possible to win at ISU. Plus, a prospective coach would know the requirements:

    1. Don't do anything foolish off-court to embarrass the school, and keep your players out of academic/legal run-ins.

    2. Don't cheat (maybe that would eliminate 70 percent of good prospects -- but at least it's clear)

    3. If you average 15 wins per year, you might still have a job after four seasons.*

    4. Keep your recruits around long enough to actually build a team.

    5. If you do win with any regularity, fans will love you.

    Not a bad gig, really.

*No. 3 probably won't apply next time around...

Why wouldn't you want to come here? You're going to get a 6-8 year contract. You're going to have a ton of leeway because the bar has been dropped so low. And you'd have an AD who has shown he's willing to put up with mediocrity.

I would think this is the exact type of situation up and comers are looking for.

Re: Would up and coming coaches want to come here?

Just sell the job as a head coaching job in the Big 12, which is constantly regarded as one of the top conferences in the country. Also, market it as a stepping stone to the job of your dreams. I would happily take a TF type that is just hear to improve his resume and move on. give me a coach that turns around a loser program to a 20 game winner and then take off. After that we might be able to get higher level recruits.

It would make a nice stepping stone. Tim Floyd did okay in the pros for awhile. LE is back on the mend at Southern. Johnny is loved decades later. Wayne even opened up a local business after retiring.

Speaking from experience, I coached my daughter's 3rd grade basketball team this winter. And yes, I am interested in the job.

Exactly. Think of the real world equivalent:

Hiring Partner: "We would love to offer you the job as our CEO and President, do you have any quesitons"

Potential CEO: "Yes, what all would the position entail"

Hiring Partner: "Well, we have a general sales quota we would like you to hit, but if not don't worry about it. We have been looking at enhancing our productivity, but if it stays the same or gets worse don't sweat it. At the end of each year we will act like we evaluate your performance, but we really don't look at it that hard. We also would expect you to foster a good relationship with those working under you, but if they leave because of you its not really a problem"
