Jay Bilas' comments: do they apply to ISU?

Jay Bilas commented on the Iowa basketball situation in the DM Register, saying that the blame for things going bad in Iowa City goes beyond Lickliter:

"A coach’s job is to win games,” Bilas said. “Then an athletic director and a president’s job are to hire a coach that’s going to win games.

“And if they can’t do that, if I were the boards of trustees, I’d have the president and the athletic director on my carpet asking them how they screwed this up so bad.”

Sounds like he would say the same about things in Ames.

Agreed. Pollard gets too much of a pass around these parts. Someone needs to be holding his feet to the fire on this one.

I'm fine with holding Pollard's feet to the fire on this one. I just think he has done too much good in other ways for the AD to whack him, imo.

You can't blame pollard for what's gone wrong with mcdermott. With the budget we have for a coach, EVERY coach we hire will likely be somewhat of a gamble. That gamble has ultimately failed with mcdermott, but his decision to hire McD in the first place is justifiable.

What you can hang on pollard is the contract extension he apparently gave him for no logical reason, and the fact that he hasnt gotten rid of him now that he's proven that he will not succeed here.

Re: Jay Bilas' comments: do they apply to ISU?

Hiring a coach is a gamble. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. Why sould the board of trustees really care about the BB program anyway? Lick was a good hire at the time as was Mac. At some point a coach has to keep players and win games. Bilas was just standing up for someone in the Basetball brotherhood. He was also making it so he could still talk to these guys and get the info. But this is the reason Iowa will have a hard time making a hire and a reason why I think JP had to give Mac another year.

Nah, don't whack him. But I'd be real clear that you will whack him if he doesn't pull it together.

In other words, make it known he's not going to get the Greg McDermott treatment.

agree. I support much of Pollard's effort. But this position (MBB head coach) his HUGE to this university...way bigger than track and tennis and gymnastics combined. And he has F-ed it up so bad it may take us a decade or longer to recover. I gotta look his way on this one and he needs to feel some heat for it. No supporter of anyone in college sports should give away free passes whether it be a fan or an AD.

I would also add that you can't fire everybody everytime a hire goes south.

you can if it is your "marquee" program. At least you can if they don't have the balls or the support to change the situation.

I for one think that whenever we hire the next coach, we put a clause in there that says 'if you dont make the NIT by year 4, the AD shall have the *option* to fire with cause, resulting in no or a significantly reduced buyout'

Any coach that isnt confident they can even make it to the NIT once every 4 years isnt a coach we want anyways.

I'd make it the NCAA and I'm not kidding. If you aren't in the NCAA tourney by year 4 it isn't going to happen. You won't be able to recruit any talent that isn't JUCO (see our current situation).

I was debating whether to do that.. but at this point i'm hoping mcdermott hasnt put the program so low it might be hard to do that..

At least his comments underscore to me that the most important job of any AD is ensuring the strength of the marquee/revenue sports by hiring the right coaches in those sports.
