New commit for Chizik / track & field

Huskerlandpreps is reporting that Luke Pinkelman has commited to ISU. He's a 6-3 280 lb lineman in the 07 class who appears to be a good athlete. He's also a shot/discus thrower who was set to sign with the NU track program next year. He changed to ISU after he was offered a chance to compete in both FB and T&F. I'm not sure of the scholarship situation, but am wondering if he might start with track & switch to FB if he shows that he can contribute. I'm pretty sure that he would have to be either a true walk on in both sports or count against football if he ends up on scholarship.

if you play a down of football you have to be on a football scholarship. so it is possible for him to redshirt and as long as he doesnt step onto the field he can remain on a track schollie. same thing happened a few years ago with andy kohler wr/high jumper. andy went on fb schollie his jr year.

Thanks for the explanation. I knew that there was some type of restriction.

Here's some more info on Pinkleman from the Kearney Hub http://www.kearneyhub.com/site/news....d=577565&rfi=6

So just so i understand, he can be on a track schollie, unless he actually plays in a regular season game? SOunds like a good deal for both parties. If hes not great and never plays, no big deal.

This is great news. I'm not sure what the ISU track program is currently like but I know historically it is a great program (I was in school when Danny Harris was there).

At any rate, many FB coaches mandate that their athletes only focus on FB. However, there are some smart coaches that will "share" a player with Track. This enables them to offer the option of doing both to a kid that is inclined to do both. Nick Saban came to LSU and developed a great relationship with the track coach and was able to get a number of "speed guys" that wanted to do both. Most end up making a career out of FB but some (like Xavier Carter) choose to go pro in track.

I hope this helps us in recruiting some speed for FB!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

    doesnt RJ run track too?

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

Texas in the late 90's was notorious for this dual athlete role. Thier throwers anyway. I went down to the Texas relays with the ISU track team and I saw mountainous men throwing disc, shot, and hammer. All from the O-line/D-Line, I think 2 or 3 of thier guys made nationals that year.

Not great anymore. I believe the number of qualifiers for the national events has diminished substantially since you were here. I would look for Jamie to give those coaches some incentive to get the programs back in order. They have been kind of hiding in the background for a while but with the new Athletic Dept goals in place all of the teams are held accountable for results. Finishing in upper 1/2 of the conference, and competing for conference titles. We should be better Indoor than we are with the facility that we have. As the dust settles from the Football season watch for our AD to look in that direction. I hope he does anyway.

JP looks at the collective track coaches....
    He raises the People's Eyebrow....
They smell what he is cooking.
