Cyclones to Face Lehigh as No. 4 Seed in NCAA Tourney

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women’s basketball team will face Lehigh at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Hilton Coliseum in the NCAA Championship first round. The Cyclones were chosen as a No. 4 seed in the Dayton Regional, while Lehigh is a No. 13 seed. The No. 5 seed Virginia will face the No. 12 seed Wisconsin-Green Bay in the first game of the night at 6 p.m. Sunday at Hilton.

“They (Lehigh) look on paper a lot like us,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “They don’t score a lot, are a good defensive team, shoot the three a lot, and we’re obviously scrambling like crazy to find out. You win 29 games, and you are doing something right. We’ll spend a long night tonight trying to get information and luckily we don’t play until Sunday. The challenge of playing someone new is always fun. We’ll do the best we can to get ready.”

The winners of the NCAA first-round games in Ames will face off at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hilton Coliseum. The first-round games at Hilton will be televised by ESPN2. The games will be televised in a whiparound coverage across the nation with ESPN2 showing the best available action at any given point in time. The Iowa State game should be shown in its entirety in the state of Iowa, but fans should check ESPN.com for coverage details later this week.

Virginia scares the crap out of me... and they have nothing to lose in a tough environment. It will take a great (but doable) effort by the lady Clones to get to the S16.

Looks like sweet 16 might be as far as possible this year. Lets worry about Lehigh for now though!

FWIW, it looks like they struggled a bit down the stretch. I'd rather have that than a team that was hot to close out the season.

Anything on Aus yet? Is she well enough to play?

Well, I know we all didn't want UConn in the sweet sixteen, but if you are going to go out, you might as well give your best shot to the favorites. Also extremely disappointed how many negative Greg McDermott threads there are considering the Women's BBall seed announced tonight and wrestling championships this weekend.

I think UCONN got a tough draw. They may have to face Iowa State in the third round.

Nebraska is mentioned as one of 3 teams most likely to beat UCONN. I would rather face NE than ISU if I were a coach.

Its easier to ***** about the bad than talk about the good.

I for one cant wait to see what the girls do in the tourney. Hopefully I will get back in town soon enough to catch this game.

Re: Cyclones to Face Lehigh as No. 4 Seed in NCAA Tourney

We couldn't really ask for more. Except maybe being in the same bracket as NE and OK, which would get us to the Final Four...

There are two tough games ahead of the ladies this weekend. Get past those and Fennelly and staff have a full week to prepare for UConn. That will be worth seeing. They may not win, but there is a chance they could be in position to pull it out and at least it will give the girls a chance to play against the best, maybe learn some new moves...

The way I see it we win in the following ways as long as we make the sweet 16:
    1. More playing/practice time for a young team.
    2. The chance for the staff and players to measure the program and themselves against the benchmark.
    3. Positive Exposure for ISU.
    4. The chance to be Cinderella for a full week and get on the national radar

Re: Cyclones to Face Lehigh as No. 4 Seed in NCAA Tourney

There was an interesting piece in today's DSM Register on the Lehigh program. Their coach said that our program and Vanderbilt's were the two that she has tried to model her own program after. She also said that despite the home court advantage in Ames, she looks forward to playing in an arena where the women's game is "embraced."
