    NCAA Tournament Trends

A very interesting read. Especially for those like me who aren't quite sure if picking that 13 over a 4 is the right pick.

    Re: NCAA Tournament Trends

The thing about Syracuse losing in the "first round" is that they were actually like in the third round at that point. It would be like losing in the semis in the Big 10.

Wow it sucks being an iowa state fan. Im finally over the season, ready to just move on and love the tourney, make my picks. Then of course you get to read this in EVERY article.

The only 15-seed to win in the past 12 tournaments is Hampton in 2001, when it took out Iowa State in Boise, Idaho.
i get kicked in the nuts again unintentionally.... just let us be!!!

Or until the next 15 beats a 2. I root for the 15 seed every tourney now.

    I do, too.

I think the double-whammy that came after the Hampton debacle was:

    1. ISU needed to get back to the tournament within 2 years and win at least one game — thereby deflecting the attention. As it was, it took four seasons to do that (with nary a bid in the meantime)

    2. The 2-15 upset hasn't happened since (close calls with Tennessee-Winthrop and Duke-Belmont). Not to mention that Wisconsin was down big-time in '07 to TAMCC ... I thought that was "The One."

Could Syracuse lose as a #1 seed? They were the first team ever to lose as a #2 seed, back in '91. They have had bad luck against Vermont, who beat #4 seed Syracuse in the first round in '05. Of course, that was the greatest Vermont team ever assembled.

Probably rightly so, ISU had no business losing to that team. Hampton wasn't a good team that was underseeded and they snuk up on us, they were a terrible basketball team and ISU was just worse that night.

I don't know what it was, but something happened during the Texas game back in 2001 - it was as if we hit some kind of invisible brick wall or something. And we struggled to finish out the season. I think we were picked to finish 4th in conference that year, and for so much of the year we played at a level that was well above anyone thought this team was capable of that I honestly believe that we were in line for a 1 seed - until that Texas game and the wheels started to come off. We struggled to finish off the regular season championship, got knocked out of the Big 12 tournament in our opening game (what likely cost us the no 1 seed), and then the infamy. It was honestly like witnessing a train wreck in slow motion and just denying what was right before your eyes - that team was just out of gas following the Texas game.

I wasn't able to watch that game (can't remember what obligation I had) and was surprised at the final score (not so much that it was loss, but the margin) ... next day a friend/co-worker, who must have watched part of it, asked me, "What happened to Iowa State last night?" I shrugged. I assumed it was just a bump in the road. It didn't seem to make sense given how the season had gone up to that point.

I think LE somehow burned that team up, probably trying to keep things up to the standard from 99-00.

Funny thing, sometime in mid-February, I actually thought the 00-01 team might be better than the Fizer team.

The season needed to end 3 weeks sooner or 3 weeks later.

It's really hard to blame Eustachy for the way that season ended, especially when he had a top 25 team playing top 5 basketball for 90% of the season. He did his job - got everything out of that team and then some. Problem is the team peaked too early and burned everything they had before the end of the season. Even when we were playing top 5 ball, it just appeared like we were one player short of being just absolutely dominant. I don't blame Fizer, either - how can you blame a guy for leaving early when he was drafted as high as he was? That being said, I still sometimes imagine what it would have been like had Fizer returned for his senior season - we'd probably have a very pretty banner hanging from Hilton, and even if Eustachy made his blunders, we wouldn't have been in a situation where no one wanted to take over the program. But I digress...
