Anyone use external hard drive with Dish Network or DirecTV DVR?

What format does it use when you back it up from DVR to hard drive? Can you take the hard drive to your pc and burn a DVD off it?

Re: Anyone use external hard drive with Dish Network or DirecTV DVR?

I have no idea about Dish, but DTV allows it and they have instructions on how to do it....

DIRECTV: Tips & Tricks: Connect an External Hard Drive

Basically you can hook a HD to the receiver and it becomes your new storage, the internal storage will not be available at the same time. You cannot take the HD to your computer, as the data is encrypted. The only way to burn from a DVR is to hook the DVR output up to a burner and essentially "play" the movie to capture and record.

I use an external drive with DishNetwork but I haven't tried to move my recorded stuff to a PC yet. I know it's a LINUX format and it's encrypted. I had a link to a decrypter but can't seem to find it now.

I believe you also have to pay a "one-time" user fee to be able to use an external hard-drive with Dish.

Anybody know if there's a way to see how large the hard disk inside a DirecTV DVR is? I know you can see the percentage used/free, but I don't know of a way to see the actual size without opening the case.

Excuse my lack of tech nerdiness but does this mean you can plug in a flash drive? What is the benefit to this? More room than the 100 hours alloted via DishNetwork DVR??

    There was one?

According to Dish Network's manual you cannot use a flash drive. It must be an actual hard drive with its own external power source.

The main benefit for most people would be additional DVR storage space, but I want to be able to take the drive to my pc and burn DVD's off of it.

Re: Anyone use external hard drive with Dish Network or DirecTV DVR?

For Dish, you can plug a HD into any of their newer receivers to turn them into DVR's whether they are a DVR or a standard box. The advantage is that you don't have to buy a new box, just hook up a HD to it. I assume that you also can move from one TV to another. Let's say that your wife is watching something on your TV with the DVR. You can then unplug the HD and move it to another box. But, of course I think you have to pay the service charge on any box that you may want to plug into.
