    License plate tag fees

I'm a little confused about the Iowa license plate fee web site.

Normally I just do a billpay(free) through my bank to the treasurer. I noticed that they have a web site where you can pay immediately so I thought I'd try it out. But the kicker is that they'll charge you $7 if you use your bank or credit card. I understand that these card companies probably charge 2% per transaction but isn't there savings by not having to process a check?

It's not a big deal and I'll just use billpay but I have to think there could be a way around this charge.

    Re: License plate tag fees

I believe you can do it directly from your checking account opposed to through a debit/credit card (they ask for the routing and account numbers).

I think if you do it this way the fee is only a dollar or so

The IRS does this as well if you pay taxes owed via credit card.

They're just passing along the interchange costs.

    Re: License plate tag fees

Just use the electronic check option. It charges a 40 cent fee(price of a stamp). All you have to do is enter your bank routing number and account number from the bottom of your checks.

The credit card fee is ridiculous.
