Does the NCAA need to change transfer rules?

Maybe being a Cyclone fan I have a skewed perception, but it seems like transferring is an epidemic. Does the NCAA need to change its rules to provide more disincentive for transferring? Like you have to sit out a year AND lose a year of eligibility? Or maybe you should lose a year of eligibility but you could apply for a hardship to get it back, like show just cause, or if your coach was fired or quit or whatever the reason.

I don't think it would matter. These are kids and they are gonna do what they are gonna do.

Re: Does the NCAA need to change transfer rules?

I would be in favor of it. One way to do this is to restrict the redshirt year to only be able to be used before your freshman year. So often now players aren't using that redshirt which enables them an easy out if they want to transfer.

No i dont think they should. If a player doesnt like the situation he is in, he should be able to leave.

Re: Does the NCAA need to change transfer rules?

Keep in mind that just because someone like Hamilton has a scholarship that it is never guaranteed by the AD. It's a year to year thing that can not be renewed if so chosen by the coaches and AD. Not renewing would obviously have negative ramifications on recruiting, but it's been done before.

That would also enhance the disparity that already exists between what happens with coaches and players switching programs. Coaches can up and leave at any time for greener pastures so shouldn't the players also be eligible for that treatment?

Re: Does the NCAA need to change transfer rules?

The scary thing is that in most states it is even easier to transfer schools while in HS...kids are learning this transfer thing early in their lives these days.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: Does the NCAA need to change transfer rules?

Reading the Hamilton thread I had the same thoughts. I think the easiest way would be to restrict the opportunity to redshirt to the first year only.

Re: Does the NCAA need to change transfer rules?

I am totally against this. What about players that want to leave because they stand no chance to start at this level? Do we penalize them because they aren't as good as the coaches thought they would be?

If they do something like this they need to make a rule that coaches cannot leave a school before their contracts are up, just so everybody is screwed.

Re: Does the NCAA need to change transfer rules?

I agree with num1 - its just really easy to transfer these days. Just txt your old aau coach or high school coach, and in a matter of 12-24 hours, he'll have 10 programs lining up to take you. There's a reason why 300+ kids transfer each year....they can.

On the cyclones 100 years DVD, anyone remember the stories Jeff Grayer told? He went home after first semester and was for sure going to transfer. Barry Stevens had to talk him out of it. Can you imagine that happening today? If a kid goes home at break and feels like transferring...he's gone. 25 years ago...that player became one of our all time greats. Today? He becomes a great player...for someone else.

Re: Does the NCAA need to change transfer rules?

You know, I think they should be more lenient and more strict. First, if there is a coaching change, a player should be able to transfer without penalty. Second, the redshirt year should only be available in the first year or it should be applied for for medical reasons but it must be used at the same school in which you were injured playing for. Also, remember, kids do not have to be released from their scholarship. Sure it is probably better to do it than to hold them hostage, but it is not just a one way street.

It's all snark from here on out

I don't know, I have a feeling that everyone at some point at least vaguely considers the notion. Things are never peachy throughout entire careers. I'm guessing stories like that one with Grayer are pretty common really. Who knows how many times players over the years have been close to leaving without doing so that we never hear about.

Re: Does the NCAA need to change transfer rules?

You know the way the NCAA works. If you transfer from Iowa State to a different college you don't have to sit out. If you transfer to Iowa State you have to sit out 2 years. That is how they would change it.

Nobody but HB knows for sure. You pretty much know nothing....like Knownothing would like to say.

If you transfer from D-I to D-II or below you don't have to sit out a year anyway so this is really a moot point.

What would be worse -- having an unhappy player transfer or having an unhappy player on your team?

I say if a player is unhappy, let the player go where he/she will be happy.
