    I was listening...

to Miller and Deace this morning. I know, I know, but I was a little groggy from one splash too many out of the jug last night, so I had the do something to get the sludge moving.

At any rate, Miller said something right before I vacated my vehicle that really struck a chord. The were of course talking the flavor of the day, Coach Lickliter, and Miller was wondering if wanting him out was a "generational thing."

I grew up in a time when you had rotary dial phones, black and white TV (early years), and a calculator that added, subtracted, multiplied and divided cost hundreds of dollars. I hate cell phones, can't text worth a damn, and struggle with this computer most days.

And I think that the younger generation has no patience; everything has to happen right now, or they lose interest and are off to something else. That is one reason coaches will rarely get to spend much time building a program. Not just the fans, but the players, are too impatient in my opinion. Its neither good nor bad, its just the way it is.

I don't know for a fact, but I'm speculating that most of the people in Coach Mac's corner are over the age of, say 40 years. Most of the fans calling for his head are younger than that. Notice that I said "most." Just an opinion.

Interesting idea. I'm 38, but that's right about what you're getting at.

Interesting idea. This will be an interesting thread.

    Re: I was listening...

I'm only 24, but I would put myself in Mac's corner. Mainly because I am a realist as well and I realize that we didn't have many options for change. Am I dissappointed in this year, yes. Do I think that he is a bad coach for Iowa state...the jury is still out.

What I saw this year was some selfish play from his stars at times. And I know that if he would've pulled them for extended periods of time, people would've been calling for his head for that. There are some people who just want Coach Mac gone, it doesn't matter for what reason.

Sustained success takes hard work. I think too many times some people think it is just as easy to hit reset on the "Play Station" if your not Wining and just start over. I'm with oldman on this one, just my thoughts.

38 and full support of Coach Mac. Rome was not built in a day.

    Re: I was listening...

I think the age you are looking for is closer to 30. I am that age and just started using what was high-speed internet in college and grew up without a lot of the stuff you mentioned.
I guess I'll take the opposite side from you in this "debate." Those in their 40s were in school during the peak of the Orr years and those between 30-40 were in school during the "mostly" fun years of Floyd and Eustachy. I think being around ISUBB during those good times and seeing what the play and atmosphere has fallen to has more to do with the discontent with GMac than the instant gratification generation.
He's had 4 years and its tough to come away with any positives or see improvement over those years. In College BBall that's more than enough time to at least sell some hope.

    Re: I was listening...

The other thing to consider is that most people who have graduated in the past ten years, alumni up to about 35 years old, have NEVER experience four losing seasons of ISU basketball. I'm 29, born in 1980 when Orr was first hired. I don't personally know anything about ISU basketball prior to about 1985. So my entire life experience with ISU basketball has been winning with few exceptions until the last four years.

42 years old and a Gen-Xer. Definitely want a change. The president of the United States only gets a 4 year term - certainly should be able to build a winning BB team in that time.

    Re: I was listening...

I completely agree, but I would say that younger people are less patient than older people regardless of generation. The stuff you are saying was being said in 1600 when the older generation was railing on the younger generation for being lazy and impatient.

I'm 28 and a fence sitter. However almost all of the people I know over 40 either want Mac gone or have found something else to do with their time.

By the way, I didn't get a cell phone until I got married and my wife made me in 2005 when I was 24. I hadn't sent a text until last year. Trust me when I say I'm slow to adopt new technology.

It seems to me that most of the people who are in "Coach Mac" corner are in his corner simply because they like him personally.

Those who evaluate his performance objectively based on the results rather than their personal feelings towards him are usually not in his corner.

That's not how it seems to me. It seems to be that most of the people in "McDermott's corner" are there because he is the ISU men's basketball coach, and they will support him as long as he is in that role.

    Re: I was listening...

I don't know about this theory. I think a lot of the older people out there would like to see Mac go because they lived through some pretty damn good years of basketball and Mac is not getting it done. I certainly don't think there is enough evidence to generalize the sides like that. IMO I would say supporters and non-supporters are scattered.

    I'm on Twitter too: Tre4ISU

    Or so I have read.
