    NCAA scoring

I was wrong on the placement points -- see below for corrections.

    -----------
I'm working on a spreadsheet (not sure I'll get it done before nationals).

I want to confirm scoring (I always have trouble finding the placement points etc.).

1 bonus point for major decision and tech. fall without back points.
1.5 bonus points for tech. fall with back points.
2 bonus points for fall/forfeit/DQ (but NOT for a bye).
You only get the advancement/placement points from a bye if you win your next match, unless it's the last match (one of the 4 placement matches). Actually, I'm not sure what would happen with a bye in later rounds.

1 point for advancement in championship bracket *until* you get to guaranteed placement.
1/2 point for advancement in consolation bracket *until* you get to guaranteed placement.

Placement points (they get awarded as you earn guaranteed spots):
    1st 16
    2nd 12
    3rd 9
    4th 7
    5th 5
    6th 3
    7th 2
    8th 1

If in the Championship bracket you win:

Pigtail Round 1 -- 1 point (most wrestlers have a bye and need to win round 1 to collect this point).
Round 1 -- 1 point (plus most wrestlers get to collect the 1 point from the pigtail round bye).
    Round 2 -- 1 point.
Quarterfinals -- 3 points (guaranteed 6th (and All American)).
    Semifinals -- 9 points (guaranteed 2nd).
    Finals -- 4 points.

If in the Consolation bracket you win:

Pigtail Round 1 -- 0.5 points (most wrestlers have a bye and need to win the next round to collect).
Round 1 -- 0.5 points (most wrestlers will also collect the 0.5 points from the pigtail round bye).
    Round 2 -- 0.5 points.
    Round 3 -- 0.5 points.
Round 4 -- 1 point (guaranteed 8th (and All American)).
    Quarterfinals -- 2 points (guaranteed 6th).
    Semifinals -- 4 points (guaranteed 4th).
    Finals -- 2 points (3rd place).
    5th place match -- 2 points (5th place).
    7th place match -- 1 point (7th place).

Never realized that the semifinal match (as a single match) is worth more than double any other single match.

    Re: NCAA scoring

If you win a semi-final match you go from having received your 6th place points and jumping clear to no worst than second. So yes its a huge amount of points for a team to win their semi-final matches.

I thought that it was 2 points for advancment but 1 point in the back side?

I actually have an excel spreadsheet for keeping score. I am unsure of the placement points for nationals at this time but all that needs done is entering in those points in a table.

    Re: NCAA scoring

Here is the easiest way to figure scoring.

Remember, you do not get points for a loss. You can't really say that 3rd place gets this # of points because there are different ways to get 3rd. You could lose your 1st match then fight your way throught the consolation or you could lose the semifinal and win your next (2) matches for 3rd. Both ways produces a 3rd place, but with different scoring as I'll explain below.

    Bonus Points
    2.0 - pin
    1.5 - tech fall
    1.0 - major

==>Bonus points Count the same in Championship or Consolation Bracket.

    Championship Bracket:
    1st win (thur morning) = 2 pts
    2nd win (thur night) = 1 pt
3rd win (fri morning) = 7 pts - quarter finals
    4th win (fri night) = 7 pts - semi
    5th win (sat night) = 4 pts - championship

    Consolation Bracket:
Assume you lost your 1st match.
    1st win (thur night) = 1 pt
    2nd win (fri morn)= 0.5 pt
    3rd win (fri morn) = 0.5 pt
    4th win (fri night) = 3.5 pt (all-american)
    5th win (fri night) = 3.5 pt
    6th win (sat morn)= 3.5 pt
    Championship of 3rd/5th/7th (sat morn)= 1 pt

    SO:
    1st = (2+1+7+7+4) = 21 pts + Bonus
    2nd = (2+1+7+7) = 17 pts + Bonus
3rd = Different ways to get there
    Championship way = (2+1+7+(lost semi)+3.5+1(3rd place match) = 14.5 + bonus

another example to get 3rd: Lost 1st match, but fought way to 3rd place - (1+.5+.5+3.5+3.5+3.5+1) = 13.5 + bonus

Where did you get any of these numbers? They are way different from mine. If nothing else, I think you're incorrectly adding .5 advancement points in the cons. bracket once you get to all american. I'm fairly sure that the advancement points (1 in champ, .5 in cons.) end completely once you get to guaranteed 8th place.

Any why would you get 7 points for winning the quarterfinals? Are my placement points way off?

EDIT -- Indeed, my placement points were wrong (no thanks wikipedia). As I said, I'm pretty sure that the advancement points go away once you get guaranteed 8th.

    Re: NCAA scoring

    Placement points should be:

    1st 16
    2nd 12
    3rd 10
    4th 9
    5th 7
    6th 6
    7th 4
    8th 3

which jives better with what I had remembered.

    Then each win:
    Championship bracket:

    Pigtail Round 1 -- 1 point.
    Round 1 -- 1 point.
    Round 2 -- 1 point.
    Quarterfinals -- 6 points.
    Semifinals -- 6 points.
    Finals -- 4 points.

    Consolation bracket:

    Pigtail Round 1 -- 0.5 points.
    Round 1 -- 0.5 points.
    Round 2 -- 0.5 points.
    Round 3 -- 0.5 points.
    Round 4 -- 3 points.
    Quarterfinals -- 3 points.
    Semifinals -- 3 points.
    Finals -- 1 point.
    5th place match -- 1 point.
    7th place match -- 1 point.

    Re: NCAA scoring

Trust me. These numbers are correct.

Unless the NCAA changed the scoring system, this is how it is calculated. Go to ncaa.org. They have how many points each wrestler scored and the bracket for last year.

Example: Gallick (ISU 141 - scored 14.5 pts (finished 3rd)

Won 1st match by dec (+2)
Won 2nd match by dec (+1)
Lost 3rd match to Jagger OSU (nothing)

Dropped to loser bracket - are following me? he has scored (3) points for ISU after (3) sessions).

Won diaz by dec (+3.5) - guarenteed all american
    won russel by dec (+3.5)
    won krom by dec (+3.5)
won tanelli for 3rd place (+1)

    Lets add all those up: +2 + 1 + 3.5 + 3.5 +3.5 +1 = 14.5

    GOD Damn I'm smart.

    Finals -- 1 point.
    5th place match -- 1 point.
    7th place match -- 1 point.
Dude, Trust me, your scoring system is completly hosed. Look at what I have, it is correct. Go to ncaa.org. if you don't believe me.

Remember, you do not get points for a loss. Finals have always been 4 points and Semi/quarter are 7.

    Re: NCAA scoring

Melvin - Yes, you came up with the right score for Gallick but that is not how it is scored.

1 point for advancement (if you win your first match, you receive another point for the pigtail round) on the Championship side
1/2 point for consolation advancement which includes matches after you are guaranteed placing.

    1 - 16
    2 - 12
    3 - 10
    4 - 9
    5 - 7
    6 - 6
    7 - 4
    8 - 3

Galiick scored 4.5 (3 pts on the Championship side and 1 1/2 for the first 3 consolation wins) advancement points and 10 points for 3rd place.

There are NO points for Quarterfinals or Semifinals. They award the lowest placement points during those rounds. Thus, if you win Quarters you are guaranteed 6th place (6 points) plus you get the advancement point.

I guess there are two ways to skin a cat.

Your way seems very complicated, its way too difficult to calculate your score. plus you do not know how many points you have. I believe my way is much easier to follow and is more accurate.

We agree Gallick scored 3 pts in the Championship Bracket (2 pts for 1st win, 1 pt for 2nd win). If he would have beat Jaggers in the Quarter, he would have scored 7 pts for ISU. I'm not sure what you mean by on points in the quarter or semi's? He wins, ISU gets 7 more points for that round.

But Gallick lost, so he scored 3.5 pts for his 1st, 2nd and 3rd consolation win and 1 pt for the 3rd place match.

This reminds me of the time I told my wife that I was certain of some fact . . .

Well at least I started this thread by asking if I was wrong, and I was -- on 2 points.

The placement points were wrong (I'm blaming wikipedia).
And the advancement points continue until the 4 "place" matches.
I'll start a new thread since I royally messed this one up.
