What would you do with McDermott?

Just trying to get a sense of what people think is the right direction for the program. It seemed like a week ago, everyone was in agreement GMac had to go. But with Pollard stating he will be back, it seems more people are on board with it.

I am actually for giving him two more years for a few reasons that I'll probably get ripped for:

    1. He hasn't forgot how to coach. What he did at UNI and wherever he was before, was amazing.
    2. This year was like a year one (go ahead, rip into me). He had so many new faces, with a new offensive system. He essentially became our "new" coach this year by recruiting a different type of player and running a new system.
    3. Finding a new coach is just as big of a risk as keeping McDermott. If the next coach doesn't work out, we'd be in big trouble.

    What's your thoughts?

Granted it's only 8 total votes so far I am surprised that four of them are for giving him two more years...I'm sure that will change fast but still interesting...

It is a little surprising but I think most people will say if you just give him one more year, that it's a waste since Brackins and Gilstrap will most likely be gone.

Re: What would you do with McDermott?

Where's the "Glad I'm not the AD so I don't have to make this decision" option?

If you had asked this question prior to this last Saturday, I'm sure the results would be radically different. I'm sure a lot of the people that wanted McDermott fired prior to Saturday are now falling into the "he bought himself another year with that one win" category. I guess while it was a huge win for McDermott, I'm not sure why one win, as big as it was, should change the overall opinion of the fan base. So yeah, I guess I'm still of the opinion it's still probably time to move on, even with that win on Saturday.

Like I said, I'm glad I'm not the one that has to make this decision.

Would anyone be suprised if the UNI job became available if GM would jump at it?

If Jacobson takes another job I wouldn't be suprised at all. GM is aleady pitching in the top of the 9th down 0-4 with bases loaded and a 3 balls on the batter.
Plus his son is going there.

I can see him going back even if he is doing well here.

That being said I think jake is there for a long time.

Part of me agrees with this, but the other part thinks that McD knows that if he were to do that, his chances of getting back to BCS level are very slim.

I understand what your saying but this is basketball so both programs are on the same level, one is just in a tougher conference.

My first thought was, that's ridiculous. After thinking about it, it's not as crazy as you think. UNI would probably take back GMac with open arms, plus he would coach his son. That would be a classy way for GMac to step down at ISU without the university shelling out a ton of money.

    Probably will not happen though.

Re: What would you do with McDermott?

I was just ok with the GMac hire (admittedly I was outraged at Morgan getting canned). What bothered me about GMac was that he never won a conference title or an NCAA game. His last year he had a big lead in the conference with a couple of weeks to go and dropped about 6 of his last 8 games to blow the conference title. With the greater success of Jacobsen at UNI my concern is we have the same situation that Colorado has in football with Hawkins. Jacobsen may well have been the key to GMac's prior success as a coach.

People thought Mac was there for the long haul too. If somebody comes at him with 4x the money Jake is going to listen intently. Plus it's not his alma mater like it was for Mac.

You have to keep GMac for another year at least. We simply do not have the money to do it right now if we wanted to. You have to give him the benefit of the doubt again, and hope it pays off until you can pay him off.

No freaking way does Mac go back to UNI. Would you take a 4x pay cut to take a lesser job at your work? I doubt it.

Isn't it more lucrative than moving down to DII or becoming an assistant?

    What's your thoughts?
    1) He hasn't forgotten how to coach. He never knew how to coach at this level.
    2) ?? 4 out of our 5 starters were returning players to start the year. If you can't integrate 3 or 4 new players to take minutes, you will never succeed in the Big 12.
    3) We're already in big trouble.
    4) None of it matters. We're married to his contract.
