Assuming things go well next year...

I am sure this board is not the norm, but if the sentiment on this board is what Greg is hearing on a daily basis, is the following a concern.

Assuming we make the tournament next year (I know big assumption), so everybody is happy with Greg and his contract. We sign a great recruiting class and want him to stay long term. Someone comes knocking and offers him a lot more money.

Does the way he is being treated now affect whether he would stay or go? I want to win as bad as the next guy, but just be careful what you wish for. I have heard he is a good guy with a good family and I want that type of person to want to be our basketball coach.

Ummm.... Greg is being treated better by the fans than any other coach at this level with his record that I have ever seen.

Very few schools at the Big 12 level would give him a 5th year. He should be ecstatic at the way he is being treated by Iowa State.

I think as long as he has the support of the AD on his side, GMac will be the ISU coach indefinitely.

If he gets us to the tournament next year, that is still not going to bring anyone calling to off him a job. Unless maybe he wanted to change to the Horizon league. But one year of success is not going to attract any attention from the mid-majors and up.

what the heck are you talking about.

GMac makes a great salary and is treated like a king in comparison to other coaches that have delivered so little at other institutions.

yes I think Iowa State University is treating him very fair, but I don't think the fans are. Not necessarily saying the fans should but he will remember how the fans treated him during the bad times if / when the good times come. The sentiment on this board from the fans is that they don't want to treat him the way Iowa State is treating him.

Agreed. If you are talking about a higher program swooping in to take him away, those schools are going to want someone with a better resume than 4 crappy seasons and one decent season at ISU. (Unless the job opens up at Auburn). Actually, at that point I don't think he would be a serious candidate for any BCS job, let alone something that could be considered a step up. He would still have a lot more to prove.

GMac is being treated pretty good. I doubt that too many other programs would put up with 4 years of pathetic MBB.

My worry is that ISU plays a touch better next year and we barely make the NIT in a weaker Big 12. Then what do you do? Hey, he made a post season Tourney. Do you give him a contact extension?

Re: Assuming things go well next year...

I wouldn't worry about him being hired by another team.
But I do worry with the treatments by several fans who attacked him personally. Attacking coaching and recruiting is one thing, but personal attacks are dangerous. Not only for him but also for his families, prospective coaches and recruits. I don't want to see our coaches' lives unravel because the families have to cope with personal attack.

sorry, but i can't get passed the assumption we will make ANY tournament next season. remember how we aren't going to make one this year and how we will be (almost certainly) losing our two best players.

Dude, we have been pretty bad for four years. I think we are treating him fine. We haven't set up picket lines yet. If anything he should feel obligated to fill out his contract because we have given him more leeway than the vast majority of schools in our position would have done.

He would have to prove he could win consistantly before other schools would even be interested. They aren't going to be interested in someone after 4 bad yearss and 1 good one. He would have to win a couple years in a row. By that time everyone would be happy.

Doesnt his contract go out to like 2015 already? Do you need to give an extension?

Gene Chizik disagrees but I cannot see him getting offers after one post season appearance.
