The NCAA will announce the 330 student-athletes set participate in the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships via a Web stream selection show on NCAA.com on Wednesday, March 10 at 6 p.m. ET.
NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee chair, Brad Traviolia, will provide the show's introduction while Pat Tocci, Director of Administration and Public Relations for the National Wrestling Coaches Association, will serve as the host as he unveils each of the 10 brackets in the championships field.
How does this work? Never paid attention before. How many do we get in?
Right now we have 9 out of 10 wrestlers going to the NCAA's. Each year the NCAA allocates so many spots per weight per conference. See below. Once each conference has wrestled their conference tournament, usually 2 weeks before the NCAA's, the NCAA will then choose roughly 46 "Wildcards". These go out to certain wrestlers that did not qualify for the allocated spots in each weight class. With that being said ISU's 184lber Jerome Ward did not qualify, he finished 5th and the top 4 finishers at 184lbs in the Big 12 tournament automatically qualified for the NCAA's. Hopefully, I would guess more than likely, Jerome will get a Wildcard since he has been ranked virtually all year.
If ISU wins this they will have earned it, they have about as tough a draw at almost every weight as imaginable.
Long versus Robles in the quarters
Fanthrope has Grey in the second round then Dennis in the quarters - ouch
Jensen with Humphrey in the first round
Mueller and Metcalf in the quarters
Reader and Sponseller in the quarters
Burk with Blanton in the first round, Bennett in the second then Borschel in the quarters if he gets through that mess
Ward with #1 seed Smith first round
Varner will be a finalist
Big Z should get to the semis then face either Erekson or Dudziak
I see 2 for sure and possibly 3 in the semi's in Varner, Big Z and Reader and to put it into perspective about how tough it is for the Clones I could see 6 Hawks in the semis:
Marion (he got a great draw and I wouldn't be shocked to see him in the finals)
