Who is going to be our scorer next year?

Assuming Brackins and Gilstrap are gone, who is going to be our scorer? Our go to guy? I look at the guys returning and I see a lot of nice role players, but no one who can carry the load offensively. Can any of the incoming guys create their own shot and score? I think we could be pretty good defensively next year, but you don't really want to go into games thinking you need to keep the other team under 60 points in order to win...

Re: Who is going to be our scorer next year?

I would guess that Phillips leads the team in scoring next year with DG, Dendy, SC, and Ham all being similiar in points. We really need a scorer and maybe one or two of these jucos can help

Re: Who is going to be our scorer next year?

I'm guessing Phillips will end up being our "go to guy" but with the kids returning, I can see a slew of the scoring between 9 and 12 ppg (Phillips, DG, SC, Hambone, Dendy, maybe Clayburn...assuming he's here). In short, I don't think scoring is going to be a problem. Grabbing rebounds, though? That might be a struggle.

No way I am going to guess Phillips to be the leading scorer, when he hasn't played a second of Division I basketball. That is just expecting too much. I am concerned with scoring as well for that reason....Garrett, Dendy, SC, Ham -- none of them would appear to be 15-16 point a game guys. Assuming JVB is granted the extra year, he might be my pick for leading scorer. Before he got hurt, I thought he showed some improvement inside, and he has proven he can shoot from deep.

I do agree with you on one thing. To be successful, the Cyclones are going to need guys like Phillips and Clyburn (if he commits) to come in and immediately contribute scoring.

Re: Who is going to be our scorer next year?

SC has put up some decent numbers over the past half dozen games. Averaged almost 13 points per game. Not saying that he will be our leading scorer next season, but if he can average that for an entire year, I will be very happy.

Re: Who is going to be our scorer next year?

i would prefer that there is no main scorer. look at UNI this year, their leading scorer was 12 ppg - they are a tough team to stop because everyone is a threat to score. I would rather have 5-7 players averaging 8-12 points / game.

I would be shocked if Phillips leads in scoring. He was not even a prolific scorer at Marshalltown. He is a solid player, who makes the right plays. Maybe we can have 5 guys average between 9 and 13 and be like UNI.

Re: Who is going to be our scorer next year?

Yea, I could see rebounding being a problem too, but I still think the biggest issue is scoring. Yea, I could see a lot of those guys in the 9-12 point range, but how many good teams do you know of that do not have a go-to kind of scorer. Someone who athletic enough to create their own shot and shots for others. And that's what concerns me heading into next season. That and a really good lock down defender (we have a couple effort guys but no one who can shut down another team's best player)...

this. I would be very, very pleased if we could consistently expect double digit scoring from SC, Ham, Dendy, and JVB. I also think that Colvin will become much more of a scoring threat as he develops.

Our defense is going to have to vastly improve in order to do that. I am not sure we have the athleticism or the toughness...

We need to get 10-12 per game from DG and 15-18 form Scotty. 10-12 from Ham, 12-15 from Colvin, 6-8 from Venderbeeken. Then about 12-15 from the bench.

Re: Who is going to be our scorer next year?

Mac alluded to this today during his press conference. He talked about how there won't be a guy who averages 17 points a game next year and how it will be a more balanced roster. If I had to guess right now, I'd go with Phillips but let's be honest...you never really know with a JUCO. Of the returning players, I'd say that Christopherson has the potential to be that guy, especially with how he's played as of late. Dendy has all sorts of potential as well but he hasn't shown me enough consistency to make me comfortable.

I think JVB could be a huge factor next year. I am not necessarily talking about pure scoring. All I am talking about is his ability to take one big man away from the hoop and be a legitimate three point threat. He can open up the inside for Ham but more importantly he can make room for our perimeter players to penetrate.

Re: Who is going to be our scorer next year?

I would have to say DG or Scotty.

DG Scotty- 13 pts a game
    Phillips- 12 pts
    Ham Dendy 11 pts
    Colvin -8
    JVB Ejim 7 pts
