    42"+ HD Flat Screen Advice

Looking for advice from any TV experts or recent purchasers on HD LCD TV brands. Looking to blow the tax return and finally upgrade our TV situation. I'd like to spend between $800-900 and get either a 42" or 47" LCD.I've se en several Phillips and LG models in this price range around Ames, but haven't done much looking online yet. Of course I wouldn't be against going bigger, but everything I've seen above 47" has been out of my price range so far.. Any comments, reviews, or horror stories appreciated.

Samsung seems to have some good TVs. If I had the $ that's the brand I get.

Agreed! The picture on their plasma is amazing. Amazon has had some great deals on older models(last year).

Re: 42"+ HD Flat Screen Advice

Thanks guys. I've just started looking around on Amazon and they do seem to have some good deals. I've heard only good things about Samsung's so far. Question for you. What are the pros and cons of Plasma vs. LCD at that size class? I remember hearing something about the bigger plasma TVs sucking a lot of power or maybe getting pretty hot...I might have it backwards though.

I have a 46'' Samsung LCD 1080 i, 60 hz, paid 850 for it on black Friday. It is low hz, but I think it still has a great picture. I think Target has a 46'' Sony with the same specs on sale for 899. I would go with that.

Re: 42"+ HD Flat Screen Advice

ray - my understanding is where the tv will be placed ... well lit room (living room and so on) would be better suited for an lcd and a lower lit room/darker such as a basement would be better suited for a plasma .... someone please correct me if i'm wrong

I am biting my tongue saying this...but I saw a Visio at a restaurant yesterday that had an amazing picture. I feel dirty just thinking that. Not a big fan of off-brand electronics.

Yeah, it's really not so much about the brand name as what they can give you for the price. A lot of these off-brands are made in the same factories as the more expensive ones like Samsung and Sony. Then there are brands like Westinghouse which used to be big and known for quality which are now going down the hole.

Re: 42"+ HD Flat Screen Advice

I have both an LCD and Plasma. The Panasonic Plasma has the better picture out of the box and a lot better if you're looking at it from an angle. Direct sunlight on the TV makes it look bad but as long as you have curtains you'll be ok.

I bought mine 46" Panasonic Plasma 1080p about 6 months ago from American TV on 86th and couldn't be happier. I bought a 37" Samsung LCD touch of color 1080p, 120hz, etc and it's also very nice. I was disappointed when i first got the LCD but after running it through Digital Video Essentials, it now looks good.

Re: 42"+ HD Flat Screen Advice

StormnClone58 is correct on both of his statements. Ray, best place to find deals (on anything really) is Slickdeals.net: The best coupons, deals and bargains to save you money! If you can wait a month or so, I'd be willing to bet you'll be able to find a 50+ in your price range. I've seen them down there before, they will be there again. Samsung is the best currently, but not necessarily needed. If you plan on having this TV for your main entertainment for the next 5-10 years, I would recommend 120hz, but if you plan on it being your main tv for 2-4 years, then 60hz is just fine.

Re: 42"+ HD Flat Screen Advice

American TV has a deal this week. Any TV over $900 includes a 5.1 surround sound system. I'm sure it's a weak system but for free it would be fine. They have a 46" LCD 1080p 120hz Toshiba for $1,088 and a 47" LG LCD with the same specs for $996.

I've been searching all the usual suspects and getting baseline prices today for 46-47" TVs. I am probably going to go for a 120Hz TV as I don't plan on replacing it for a long while (crosses fingers). I love Slickdeals, I'll definitely be monitoring that closely. Thanks for all the advice so far! It has been really helpful. I'll be sure to let you guys know what I decide (Tax Return was auto-deposited this morning!!).
