An underlying effect of this win

I know that on the surface this is a huge win, btu hardly one that means anything on a large scope right now. It didn't strengthen the resume of the team to get us off the bubble and it didn't proved seeding help for the tournment like it would teams in a different position than us. I do, however, think this game could have a huge affect on not only our attitude in the Big 12 tournament, but how this team looks down the road.

Imagine you are a guy on this team this year who has the opportunity to stay or leave. The guys I think this applies to are Colvin, Oliver, Buckley, Dendy, and Gilstrap. Now imagine you have gone through this **** show of a season buting into everything Mac has done yet never reaping any measurable benefit. If you are some of these guys you aren't getting playing time on a bad team. Some others are getting time but you are losing. Maybe you have family somewhere else and would rather be there. Maybe you have the option of taking a chance at the NBA now, not really knowing where you will go or if you will be drafted, but right now losing is getting old and maybe you are better off taking that chance just so you don't have to endure this again.

Now imagine the excitement you just felt. You just beat the number 5 team in the country. You finally made it over the "hump." There is finally something to be happy about. Maybe something clicked and you could just tell that this was the beginning or an upward turn.

What I am saying here is that if any of these guys were on the fence of staying or leaving, maybe this win brings them back. Maybe now they have a confidence that says, "Hey, maybe this isn't a hole for my career to fall into." I saw a lot of guys on this team tonight with an attitude different than I have seen before. I don't think I have watched a game with Dendy playing since he was reinstated. He looked like a completely different person. He went from seeming like a hard headed kid who wasn't happy to being a guy that just wanted to play. To me, this was very similar to the turnaround I saw from Colvin. I think this win was bigger than just this season. I think, if some were thinking about maybe leaving, this win could have renewed a commitment to ISU basketball. I know it is just one win. I realize it doesn't mean much to us as fans considering the rest of the season, but put yourself in their shoes. I don't think they think like that. If they did, I don't think we win this game. They would have given up long ago. I think these guys want to be here. I also think that if they doubted being here, this win and that accomplishment could be the key to getting rid of that doubt. I am not saying they all should or will return due to this win. All I am saying is that possibly in their mind this provides them with the opportunity to see that they could be successful here. Especially when they consider they got this done in crunch time without the guy everybody considers to be our leader and best player, they have to see the possibility of a successful future here.

Some good points, nice post. I especially agree with the last part. Finally winning a tight game like this could pay huge dividends later. Maybe this has taught our team how to win. Hopefully they can keep that attitude in our remaining game(s). More importantly, I hope they remember what it takes and keep the winning mentality going into next season.

    Winning cures all.

I know I've been very critical of the team and coach over the past couple of months, and I would love it if we could look back at things and this be a turning point.

I think Dendy showed he can play in this league. I think Scotty showed what he can do when healthy. Gilstrap showed incredible courage playing hurt. Colvin can get to the rim at will and will finish those plays in the lane when he gets a little stronger. Buckley even showed some skills. This game, if nothing else, shows that there is some promise for next year.

Like I said on the call in show, it is possible that at some point maybe one or two years, or hell maybe even in the tournament this COULD be a win that defined Mac, like the Nebraska win defined PR this season.

I want to see what Dendy can do in big minutes of a game. The kid, I think, can do some things. He hustles and he is athletic. He is pretty raw, but he could be that guy that you need on the team that is just a scrapper.

Re: An underlying effect of this win

I'm happy for these guys, they haven't been far from this many times this year and finally got one. I thought we outplayed and outcoached KSU tonight I finally remember what it's like to win a game like this as a fan. I have no idea what is going through these young men's minds about next year, I can only trust they will make the right decision.

If we parlay this into a couple of wins in the conference tourny, my Kool-Aid posting will be further over the top than normal, and my anticipation for next year will keep getting wilder.

Momentum. Focus. After a number of close losses against some good teams, this win could finally five the team the mental clarity to really put it together for 1-2 more games. Lift the weight off their shoulders going into next season.

This. In order for me to be ok with McDermott coming back next year I felt like I needed some reason for hope. Last offseason I felt like there was reason to believe this team would have a good season, and so I was strongly behind Mac. Before tonight, I didn't feel like there was much reason to believe that next year would be any better than this one. The win tonight provided that hope for me.

If we play well against Texas (...or even beat them, which I think we are capable of. Never doubt Rick Barnes's ability to underachieve.) I will feel much better about next season than I did after reading the reports that Mac will be back just this morning. If we get killed, then maybe I'll edge back towards the 'fire Mac' camp.

But right now I am hopeful.

Never doubt that Texas' guards can underachive. Our guys know they can play with Texas for 38:30. Now do it for 40, and we've got a nice little bunch of hope-induced Kool-Aid going on.
