Cubs Guzman bad shoulder out for 2010?

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune writes that right-hander Angel Guzman (shoulder) may be "cooked" for the 2010 season.

"It seems like the kid is jinxed," Cubs manager Lou Pinella said about the 28-year-old, who is also rehabbing from knee surgery. Guzman was scheduled to undergo an MRI on his sore right shoulder on Friday, but it's not clear if the results have been released

I hope that he is wrong

ESPN - The Cubs are shutting down right-handed pitcher Angel Guzman pending an exam, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Guzman is recovering from left knee surgery and he began to experience soreness in his right shoulder at the start of spring training on Feb. 17.

Re: Cubs Guzman bad shoulder out for 2010?

The Chicago Cubs announced on Saturday that right-handed pitcher Angel Guzman has a torn ligament in his right shoulder that will prevent him from pitching in the near future.

Guzman's choices are to either elect to have surgery or try to build the muscles around the tear and continue to pitch.

Guzman just can't beat the injury bug. He has a lively arm and has some really good stuff, but he just can't stay healthy and get a chance to put it all together.

Weird... injuries in Cubs pitching? I don't know what Larry Rothschild does, but he absolutely destroys pitchers and their arms.

I don't think LR had anything to do with this. Guzman has had arm troubles his whole career.

Daily Herald - The Cubs are expected to increase their efforts to add a right-handed pitcher to their bullpen.

The Daily Herald reports that any addition will likely come via trade and not free agency

I agree to an extent. The Cubs organization as a whole has been notoriously known for overpitching players. A buddy of mine is a strength and conditioning coach for a MLB team and this is pretty much common knowledge apparently.

Re: Cubs Guzman bad shoulder out for 2010?

Guzman at one time was the top pitching prospect in the system. Sad to see his career derailed by injuries although we've seen this way too many times before with the Cubs.

Glad to see Lou came out with his stance on Starlin Castro. He'll be starting the year at Iowa which I think is the right choice considering he is just 19 years old. Let him tear up AAA for awhile and after we see how bad our 2B situation is then we can justify giving him a chance at a young age and move Theriot over to 2B. Cubs have always scared me with rushing up young guys before they are ready.

Curious how the bench spots shape up too. Have some guys out of options as well as guys like Millar and Tracy who are good clubhouse vets trying to make the team. I'd like to see Fuld break camp as the 4th OF and I like Tyler Colvin too but I'm guessing as much as they want to find a place for Millar right now one of them doesn't make opening day roster, may even be Hoffpauier too. Brad Snyder also is another guy to keep an eye on but I think he's got to really impress to break camp with the big club considering who he is up against.

Silva is going to be a train wreck this season I have a feeling and his first outing was already a disaster. Wish he'd just get hurt so they can stick him on the DL and not have to worry about where he is going to fit in.

Re: Cubs Guzman bad shoulder out for 2010?

The Cubs inquired on Blue Jays reliever Jason Frasor again, writes ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. The latest call from the Cubs comes on the heels of Angel Guzman's season-ending shoulder injury. Crasnick says the Cubs are "urgently seeking relief help."
Frasor, 32, posted a 2.50 ERA, 8.7 K/9, and 2.5 BB/9 in 57.6 innings for the Blue Jays last year. He's earning $2.65MM in his last season before free agency. Frasor profiled as a Type B in the 2008-09 Elias rankings, with 66.322 points (Octavio Dotel was the lowest Type A at 68.007). But keep in mind the Cubs have not shown an inclination to offer arbitration to departing free agents in recent years.
SI's Jon Heyman addressed the Cubs' bullpen situation in today's article, noting that GM Jim Hendry made a play for Chan Ho Park before he signed with the Yankees. Heyman writes that "few teams are foolish enough to trade away proven set-up men at this point," but the Jays cashing in on Frasor now would make sense. The price for Padres closer Heath Bell would be higher, since Bell is under team control for two seasons.
The Cubs are not known to have interest in any free agent relievers, though veterans like Russ Springer, David Weathers, and John Smoltz remain unemployed.

You might want to look that up and be surprised at all the pitcehrs that DL'd since he was there and compare that to before he was there.

Examples now of some known pitchers Wood, no injuries period till he came to the Cubs, Zambrano same, Prior same. I think I did the comparison a while back like almost three years ago. It came up that 80%+ of the pitchers either went on the DL or missed a start since he was there. That was a increase of over 48% before he got there.

Re: Cubs Guzman bad shoulder out for 2010?

look at the stats, and even with all of the injuries, the cubs have had one of the best pitching staffs in baseball since Rothschild has been with the team.
As for the talk about all of the outfielders, i would not expect all of them to break camp in some sort of cubs uniform. we have too many outfielders that have a lot of potential, and a trade will likely happen in return of a reliever.
What i am scared of most is that there is all this talk from the cubs that whoever loses out on a starting rotation job will end up in the bullpen. I can see Marshall or maybe Samardzija pitching out of the pen, but does anyone really expect either of the other 2 contenders to be able to put guys out coming out in the 6th, 7th, 8th? It is scary for me, and we need bullpen help badly. I have no idea why we will bring a guy up from AAA who has started there, and put him in the bullpen in Chicago, and then send him back down to AAA to be a starter again. If we groomed some kids into becoming worthwhile relievers from the beginning, we might actually have a decent pen.
