    GMAC's Contract & Automatic Extensions

GMAC's contract per the DSM Register.... http://www.desmoinesregister.com/***...t_contract.pdf

Take a look at Sec. VII. By my reading this entitled GM to a one year automatic extension for the lost scholarships. However, he got 3 years. Supposedly it was one for the Hubalek ordeal (althought that doesn't appear to be controlled by the contract that had to be a discretion based extension on JP's part), and two for each scholarship that was lost. If you read the contract though, the number of scholarships lost is irrelevant. If you have your full allotment of scholarships in any given yearh Sec. VII does not apply.

So GM was given a 3 year extension under the guise that it was required by provisions in his contract re NCAA infractions, even though the contract appears to only provide for one of those 3 years.

Does JP have some explaining to do, or am I missing something here?

I don't see that anywhere in the contract. And I'm not seeing anything that would discount the Hubalek deal either.

How many years did we lose scholarships/Jiri?

It's all snark from here on out

Re: GMAC's Contract & Automatic Extensions

    Really? Did you read it?

The contract says he gets an automatic extension for every year he's short a scholoarship and misses the NCAA tournament. There was only one year he was short scholarship players and also missed the NCAA tournament.

There is nothing else in the contract that provides for an automatic extension.

If he gets a 3 year extension and it's characterized as an automatic extension under the contract, that seems to be misleading to me as only one of the years could be characterized as an automatic extension under the contract.

It was my understanding that it was just the first year. Also, I don't think the Jiri thing is governed by the contract. The contract (at least Sec. VII and automatic extensions) only speaks to lost scholarships, not player suspensions.

    Unless I missed something.

Re: GMAC's Contract & Automatic Extensions

I think it's definitely fair to ask him questions. He gave a three year extension and claimed it was mandated by the contract, when it wasn't.

Why is he extending a coach who had shown little or no ability to get results?

At least we've avoided all of those extra bonus payments for conference championships, making the NCAA touney, advancing to the sweet 16, making the final four, and winning the NCAA championship.

true, but his pay still continues to raise each year...with no positive results. Hopefully he earns that salary soon.

    2007 - $675,126
    2008 - $750,000
    2009 - $833,902

We didn't lose scholarships. The extension was based on the fact that he had to sit out 6-non conference games due to an NCAA Violation (his foster familly bought him a cheap car). According to previous article, the contract was extended one-year for each NCAA violation.

    Three things:

    1. The extension was for 3 years. Even assuming you're right, where does the third come from
    2. It's fine if he was granted an extension b/c of the Jiri ordeal, but that was solely JP's decision. It was NOT mandated by the contract.
    3. We lost scholarships, just not for the Jiri thing.

Re: GMAC's Contract & Automatic Extensions

Couldn't you use Section V.1.c to fire any coach "with cause" that isn't winning because the lack of ticket sales from losing is "substantially likely to have a materially injurious impact on the University or athletic program"

I've never heard of win-loss being interpretted as the time of injury construed by those types of provisions.

According to the original story from 2 or 3 years ago the three scholarships came from:

    1. 1-yr for losing 1 scholarship to APR for the 1st season
    2. 1-yr for losing 1 scholarship to APR for the 1st season
    3. 1-yr for JH missing 6 games (NCAA violation)

According to the story these were all mandated by the contract (hence why many of us are so blown away by how poor that contract was written/QCed) The story was never really discussed by JP or Gmac to my knowledge.... maybe the story was in error.... I sure hope so. But Gmac did get the 3 years so that certainly jives with the original story.
