Re: Mark Becker Article on ESPN.com

Thanls for the link, the article was an interesting read.
Mark Becker's parents, though, confuse me. Their son, who they were so worried about, who had so many problems, who had just smashed up a house, led the cops on a three-county high speed chase...and his folks just matter-of-factly pick him up at the hospital, and then the next morning just leave him at their house alone and unsupervised, with access to a car while the two of them just go off to work????

The father took the key from the car, but apparently Mark found another one:

Dave was encouraged that morning, too, but nonetheless, he took the keys out of the ignition of a car that was parked in the driveway. He didn't want Mark going into town and possibly getting into trouble.

Sometime between their loving goodbyes and the middle of the morning, Mark used a pair of antlers to open the family gun cabinet, took out a .22-caliber revolver, found another key to the car, drove to the weight room at the high school and killed Ed Thomas

    I read that.
Don't you think, after the horrific high-speed chase a few days prior, his dad would take all of the keys to that car with him? You know, maybe callect them all? And what about leaving him at their house alone for the day?
Hindsight is indeed 20/20. I just have an issue with his mother coming out now talking about how "ill" and "legally insane" their son is, when his own parents apparently didn't think so on the day of the murder.

The article states that the parents weren't allowed any information from the Dr's due to HIPAA and they first heard about his "paranoid skitzophrenia" at the trial. Seems like the parents tried to help him but without being allowed to know all the facts there wasn't much else they could do.

Thats a deep article though, good writing.

If he does, it won't be until after his appeal (assuming there is one).

I am so sick of hearing them call there son a victim. It makes me sick when I hear them call him that. He is a murderer. He may have been psychotic but he is no victim.

Smashing up a wall and screaming in a house is one thing. Murder is a completely different thing. You expect them to think that their own son could murder someone?

He is a victim of mental illness. Without that, he wouldn't be facing life in prison and Coach Thomas is still alive.

I think you missed the last episode (from a day or two prior) where he went to someone's house with a bat, and then led the police on a 3-county chase
