    PC builders

I built a lot of PC's but I think this time I screwed something up.

I got a new case so I was transferring everything over from the old case to the new one. I also took off the stock intel cpu fan(intel 775) and blew it out. I then reconnected.

I got everything hooked up and I immediately noticed that it was smoking so I unplugged it.

I unhooked everything except the following

    CPU fan
    2 power connections
    Hard drive
    ram
System panel connector (power button, reset, etc)

I then tried to power it on again and immediately saw smoke (within 10 seconds)

What am I missing here? I didn't put on any new thermal compound but would that cause me to smoke with 10 seconds. Any ideas?

only time i have had smoking right away was when I plugged a fan connector backwards and fried the wiring.

I guess just look around for burnt wiring or something else and try to find the source.

Hard to say if it caused the smoke, but always use new thermal compound.

Yeah, this could very well be the issue. Or a bad PS. Im pretty sure its a electrical issue and not an overheating problem. In most thermal situations, the pc will lock up or not post.

If its a recently new motherboard it will shut down and let you know its hot with the police like alarm. It has to be power.

I would just take everything out take everything apart and rebuild it like its new. Start with a clean slate.

Well you can ignore this question. I just tried it again and a small flame started on the mobo. I was looking to upgrade, I guess it will just come a lot sooner. Luckily I just did a back up on 2 drives of all my photo's, video, and music.

BTW-it was an Asus mobo. Must have been something I did wrong because It's been wronging strong for a few years now.

OK now for another dumb question. If I buy all new except a hard drive will I be able to plug in my hard drive and everything will work?

No, windows will freak out with all of the hardware changes. Probably send it into a continuous loop. A fresh windows install wouldnt hurt anyway.

It might work if you get everything exactly the same. But a fresh install feel great.

It's possible. I've done it. But I'm not sure it was really worth the effort. You'll get to know the Device Manager really well.

I planned on doing a fresh install anyway but I wanted to see if I could grab some things of that drive. Maybe I'll just do a fresh install on a new drive and then I assume I'll be able to have that other drive connected as well (just not booting from). The only thing I'd really like to grab off that old hard drive is things like email, bookmarks, etc. I assume I'll be able to do this.

This would be the easiest solution.

You should be able to run with your old hard drive assuming it's compatible with the system. Is it a relatively new SATA drive?

I do this when working with bad viruses. Boot off a new/different hard drive then just grab everything important off the infected drive before trying to fix it. You can install the 'old' drive internally or just use an external USB case.

What sucks more than anything is that I have no clue what caused it.

Yeah, you might want to figure that out before trying it with a new mobo.
