Mike DeCourcy from Sporting News on McDermott

I would probably lean slightly towards being a McDermott supporter then a McDermott hater that most on this board seem to have turned into, but for the most part I am neutral on the subject. I found this Sports talk radio interview concerning the BIG 12 and more specifically about the McDermott situation as well as Nebraska situation. I think the guy makes some good points. It is a 20 minute audio but they pretty much talk the Iowa State stuff in the first 10 minutes and then it's the rest of the Big 12 after that. Interesting viewpoint none the less though.

I listen to 810 once in a while, I caught part of Kietzman's show last week, and he referred to Iowa State's basketball as a "Debacle", they were ripping on how week Colorado, Nebrasksa, and Iowa State are, thus making the top of the Big 12 appear stronger than it really is...they might be right.

For those that don't want to listen for 10 mins can you expound a bit?

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

Re: Mike DeCourcy from Sporting News on McDermott

Notice how the guy did not say that GMac would get another BCS job within 15 minutes of being fired? Well, if he is such a good coach, then why would a BCS school not pick him up?

No one has really argued that GMac was did not do a good job at UNI. However, for whatever reason, he has not been able to do that job at ISU.

I do not think ISU hires another mid-major coach. I think they look for a top assistant at a currently successful BCS program. Preferably one who has been heavily involved in the recruiting.

How mad is everyone going to be if Pollard says McDermott is coming back next year? Are people braced for that?

    General idea.

    -Mac is a good coach
-Success at UNI is a result of what he built
-it's not like he got to the Big 12 and forgot how to coach
-Isn't a hire available right now that would be better
-Better solution instead of firing coach is to ask what is the reason he isn't getting it -done and help him
-Iowa State is a program where you can win.
-Speculation about Gillespi is pretty dumb.
-doesn't know what happened with WJ
-Who knows where ISU would be is Staiger hadn't bailed.

Yeah, maybe another win or two if Staiger stays but that's a huge huge stretch by me.

He didn't really make a big deal about him either. Just asked where we would be with him here still.

Given we've had like 9 lost games we've been in coming down the stretch not having the best three point shooter we started with is a decent consideration. Not an excuse but hard to ignore the loss of a teams 2nd or 3rd highest scorer mid season.

This is something I'd really like clarification on. What does the current pool of coaches look like? The last thing I want is to be turned down by every coach and their asst manager.

Given the tone in his interview it sounds like DeCourcy holds McD in high regard as high as coaches go. So saying there aren't anyone better available may be just as much a statement about his respect for McD as it is about the coaches looking for a head coaching position.

Re: Mike DeCourcy from Sporting News on McDermott

This is the same ******* that said we couldn't do any better than McCarney, and we were dumb for firing him. You don't really have to have your facts straight to praise a coach, so thats the route he chose. Has he ever criticized a coach before?

Nope, you're right Mike, ISU should expect no better than than the bottom quadrant in the big 12. Lets just try to fix a gaping hole by putting a small patch on it and see if it works, cause there are obviously no coaches out there that could win more than 4 games in the B12 here at ISU. I can't ever take his commentary on us seriously again.

A summary of some comments he made in the interview.

Greg McDermott is a great coach whose had some bad luck.

Where would we be now if Staiger hadn't quit the team?

Wesley Johnson leaving the team and then blowing up at Syracuse obviously hasn't helped his situation.

Who does ISU think they are going to hire who is a better BB coach then McDermott??

The internet sites are all full of the "Fire McDermott, but nobody is asking exactly what we need to do to fix it" Football coaches when they have problems are told to fire assistants. Nobody is asking what exactly is happening that is keeping this very good coach from winning basketball games.

College BB coaches are too easily expendable. And when coaches are fired after four years, chances are the next coach will be fired in 4 yrs again.

What's going on at UNI and Ben Jacobson is a continuation of what Gmac built. What's going on at UNI is entirely based upon the foundation that Gmac built. He made the tournament 4 yrs in a row and all the sudden he turned stupid when he moved to Ames????? Mike don't think so

Nebraska is a losing program. What coach that is moving up in the ranks is going to go to Nebraska only to lose and be fired in a 4 years. ISU is different story because you can win there. ISU needs to diagnose what is going on and figure out how to fix.

If McDermott loses his job, Mike will be surprised if he doesn't have a valley job within 5 minutes of leaving Ames.

Billy Gillespie is not a good fit for Ames, he needs to go back to Texas. He says he doesn't think there is any basis to that rumor. When he coaches in his back yard is when he does best. He was like a fish out of water at Kentucky and would be the same way at Ames.

All paraphrased by me of course......so take it for what it's worth..
