Osborne on realignment: "don't think for one minute that we're asleep at the switch"

Nebraska AD Tom Osborne made some interesting comments in a Lincoln Journal Star article recently regarding the conference realignment talk. It seems obvious (unless I'm reading too much into it) from his comments that Nebraska has at the very least, entertained discussions with other conferences.

Tom Osborne stroking his ego by "entertaining" talks from other conferences? SHOCKING!

The only less shocking thing in the Big XII this week is Dendy missing a free throw.

I like this. Puts the conference heads on notice that if they don't give the north schools a reason to stick around, we will consider better options.

Good Post, I always like listening to Osborne, he's direct and to the point, Tells it like it is.

"Next 5-6 months will be interesting"
"You don't need that extra 5 -10 million"
"Can't believe Texas could get a better deal"

As far-fetched as it may sound, 2020, ever since the talk of conference realignment began to heat up I have thought Nebraska going west and aligning itself with an expended Mountain West Conference might make some sense. From a geographic sense, there is no doubt that Nebraska to the Mountain West makes more sense than say, Nebraska to the Big 10+1 (otherwise known as the Little 11). Obviously everything would hinge on whether or not the PAC 10 raided the Mountain West of it's better schools before the conference had the opportunity to expand. If you stop and think about it, a Mountain West that included Nebraska and Colorado from the Big 12 and Boise State from the WAC would have some instant credibility. Then you elevate the conference to BCS status (which Nebraska and Colorado joining would be an absolute) and all of the sudden the remaining MWC schools begin to upgrade their athletic programs and you end up with a pretty strong conference.

A 12-team Mountain West could look like this:

    North:
    Nebraska
    Colorado
    Air Force
    Wyoming
    Boise State
    Idaho (coming from the WAC)

    South:
    TCU
    Utah
    BYU
    New Mexico
    UNLV
    San Diego State

A 16-team "super conference" could look like this (with additional WAC inclusions):

    North:
    Nebraska
    Colorado
    Air Force
    Wyoming
    Boise State
    Idaho
    Nevada
    UNLV

    South:
    Utah
    Utah State
    BYU
    New Mexico
    New Mexico State
    San Diego State (or Houston)
    Fresno State (or SMU)
    TCU

Those of you who are old enough will remember that it was only around 20 or 25 years ago that Arizona and Arizona State were in the Western Athletic Conference, before jumping ship and helping the west coast schools expand to become the Pac 10. It was only a handful of years before those two schools started becoming very competitive, in most sports, with the original conference schools. It wasn't long ago that both Louisville and Cincinnati were in lesser conferences and it didn't take long after their Big East affiliation that their programs across-the-board improved in stature. There is no doubt in my mind that if the Mountain West expanded and became a BCS conference (and again, that would be a rock-solid condition before Nebraska and Colorado joined), the original MWC schools would upgrade their programs in a hurry.

Re: Osborne on realignment: "don't think for one minute that we're asleep at the swit

OK, here's the way things will work out. ISU will have a crazy good season and win the north in football. Then the conference will fall apart beneath our feet. ISU will be left out to dry, and just when we think we are getting good, we have nothing. BAM! There you have it. ISU luck!
