We know how to compete and lose

This year, more than any other, it seems like we cannot win. Consider our Big 12 record vs. Top 3rd, Middle 3rd, and Bottom 3rd of the conference:

    1. Kansas - 2 20pt Losses
    2. K. State 1 game remaining, lost by 4 points at home
    3. Baylor - Away: 10pt Loss
    4. Missouri - 9pts away, 2pt OT home

So, 0-6 so far, with 3 blowouts and 3 close games. Certainly we aren't that far out, if just looking at the differential.

    5. Texas A&M - 4 point loss (home)
    6. Texas - 7 point loss (home)
    7. OKState - 5 point loss (home)
    8. Colorado 1 pt. Win home, 3 point loss away

So, 1-4, with all of the games close.

    9. Texas Tech 7 point loss (away)
    10. Oklahoma 5 point loss (away)
    12. Nebraska sweep
2-2, with the losses away and fairly close games.

To sum it up: We have been competitive all year long, which makes all of the losses even harder to swallow. We know how to compete and lose.

Thx for doing this. I was thinking of doing something similar. Basically we have been swamped in just four games: by 23 and 14 points in two KU games, 19 pts in CAL game and the 21 pts in the Duke game. With so many other chances to win, we failed.

Even the second KU game was close at end and Cal was very close for first half. Besides first KU game and Duke game, I feel we could have won every game played, which makes this season even more disappointing. They are close, but can not close the door at the end of games.

We looked this good with only 6-8 scholorship players & 1 walk-on? I look very differently at this season - thanks for the changing my mind on how bad this season was! Great job Cyclones!! Thanks for ALL the hard work!

This is good. Only makes me feel better about having the expectations I did before the season.

So a 10 pt loss is a blowout, but a 9 pt loss is a close game?
    Hmm

    Points don't tell the story...

If you watched the games you would know Baylor was a blowout, @ Missouri was not.

Some people are likely to misinterpret your post as "look how close ISU was to having a good season, so it's not that but," but I look at it as a breakdown of this coach's primary hurdle. I like the fact you separated it into thirds, because it helps organize what I've noticed over the last 4 years.

It would have helped to notch some zingers against top-caliber clubs, because those things can inspire the fan base in the short term, and probably built team members' morale (which might help produce confidence down the line). But there's no shame if you can't get it done against the Biggies. It's your Category 2 that has spelled doom for this coach.

    5. Texas A&M - 4 point loss (home)
    6. Texas - 7 point loss (home)
    7. OKState - 5 point loss (home)
    8. Colorado 1 pt. Win home, 3 point loss away

3 of those 5 were vs. tournament teams (unless OSU decides to tank horribly down the stretch). The OSU game was a travesty early on but the team got back in position to have serious chance to win. UT was ranked No. 1 at the time and, knowing what we know now, also beatable (so it would've been a head-turning upset at the time, and would still count as a good win today). A&M also within reach in the final minutes, opportunity wasted. At CU: win that and there were no games that would count as an obvious "bad loss" (and do you think the players might have benefited from hanging onto that one, when it came to crunch time vs. Missouri?)

And UT-OSU-A&M were AT HOME. Throw in a homecourt giveaway vs. Missouri from your Tier 1, and at very least go 4-1 in those games if you throw in KSU at home? Then the record is 7-8 in the Big 12, with 3 or 4 significant wins.

With the Big 12's competitiveness this season, and the weakness of the fringe at-large field this year, ISU would be in a bubble discussion right now at 18-12/7-8.

And that's not even factoring in the UNI & NW games, which should have been 1-1 at minimum.

GMac could have been within reach of the tournament almost every year at ISU, just by beating that middle third. And a number of those games were at home and plenty came down to one or two possessions in the final 2 minutes.

Re: We know how to compete and lose

I think all the losses where we were within a posession of winning in the last 4 minutes is a telling sign of the coaching ability. The last 4 minutes is when coaching specific plays matters the most. McDermott couldn't pull out these wins because he did a poor job of coaching, and it shows in the last 4 minutes of these games. How many times does one of our guards have to make a pass at our big men's feet before we start to blame the person coaching those players making the bad passes?

It was great that McDermott and the team were able to keep the Missouri game close the entire game, but to not get a shot off with 17 seconds at the end of regulation and again with 11 seconds at the end of the half to take the lead in a tied game is inexcusable. A better coach may still have lost that game, but would have at least had a better plan in place to execute an attempted shot.

And btw, I was not supporting the caoching change before the Missouri game. This one did me in. I would probably still have been on McDermott's side if we would have lost by 10. It's the way we lost and blew last remaining seconds that put me over the edge.

Does anyone now where to find the RPI's of the Big12 the last 4 years?

I think this is what is making the season so frustrating. We seems so close, but yet, still so far away.

Re: We know how to compete and lose

Another way to look at it this.

    Wins
    1-5 : 4 (3)
    6-10 : 3
    10-19 : 1
    20+ : 6

    Losses
    1-5 : 8 (6)
    6-10 : 3 (3)
    10-19 : 2 (1)
    20+ : 3 (2)

We went 4-8 in games decided by 5 points or less this season (3-6 in conferece), with 5 games that were out of reach (3 in conference): Baylor, KU(2), Cal, Duke.

I agree with others on this board. This is likely attributed to either a) mediocre gaurd play, or b) mental hangups/team chemistry partially influenced by coaching.

Coach mac has LOST more Big 12 games by greater than 15 points.... than he has won by one point in his career here.

    HUGE fail.
