    Help defense diagram

This does not concern the Missouri game in particular so I feel it is worthy of its own thread. I don't have Greg McDermott's email, but if we could get him this diagram I have recently drawn up I would really appreciate it.

In this diagram Missouri happens to be on offense and is labeled as O's. Iowa State is on defense and is labeled as X's. I've even taken the liberty of labeling the "hoop" for clarification purposes.

Let me get down to how help defense works. Let's say Missouri's point guard (O1) happens to get by his defender, X1. Don't PANIC! we don't have to give them an unchallenged lay-up! What can happen is defender X5 can leave his man and stop the ball. This in turn forces O1 to pass the ball or he will be called for something called a "charge." When X5 stops the ball DON'T WORRY! Defender X4 can easily slide over and guard player O5 as shown by my arrow. If we want to get really carried away with ourselves defender X2 can shift down to guard player O4!!!

By the time all of this "help defense" has occurred there is usually enough time for the defenders to get back to their original man. I hope this information was informative and I hope it helps out Greg McDermott in the future. It's relatively simple to coach and can be quite effective.

    Re: Help defense diagram

What are the not labeled pair of circles on the left side of the paper? Why does Mizzu get to have 7 players on the court? Is that why we keep losing...other teams get extra players?

I also assume the light you used exposed some speed bumps that normally can't be seen with the naked eye. We must be tripping over these "lines" and is also causing us to lose.

Those are not circles. They represent the black hole(s) that are now our basketball program.

    Re: Help defense diagram

    O, I get it now.

The Os are for Missouri and the Xs are for Iowa State.

Maybe thats why I couldn't win in Ames.

(This is in reference to a GC video on Auburn site from while back, thought was appropriate)

Next year we will begin work on defense. This year we fixed the offense.

I know this may be a little advanced for our current staff but can we cover the triangle and two next? Maybe a little box and 1? Man I wish Timmy or Larry were here.

I like the fact that you labeled "the hoop", just in case you weren't sure where that is at.

    Re: Help defense diagram

My post was a half-joke, but seriously I have never seen such an undisciplined team on defense. It is just common sense to play help defense. It is such common sense that I think that McDermott may in fact be telling his players to not help. It just doesn't make any sense. I have never seen so many uncontested drives to the hoop in my life as this year. It is unexplainable.
