The ISU team that almost was

I thought we could use a break from the current season, to take a look at an ISU team that we could have had in 2000-2001:

    PG: Jamaal Tinsley
    G: Kantrail Horton
    F: Martin Rancik
    F: Marcus Fizer
    C: Ernest Brown

(Along with the other players who played for us that year, such as Shane Power, Paul Shirley, and Jake Sullivan)

TWO McDonald's All-Americans! (Brown and Fizer)

Brown was a fantastic JuCo recruit who was originally a McD AA in high school, who committed to ISU, but decided to jump to the NBA. I think, if Fizer had announced that he was definitely going to return to ISU, that Brown may have played for us also. Brown, Fizer, and Tinsley would have been an absolutely incredible combination.

Not only do I see this team practically cake-walking to a national championship, I don't see this team losing very many games the whole season. Maybe even none at all.

Ranciz still would've guarded the wrong guy on and inbound pass and we lose in the first round.

I'm not sure about Brown, but even if you scrap him, this team would have had as good a chance as any in the country to win a national championship.

I think we would have seen Sullivan in that starting lineup rather than Rancik. It would have been a tremendous team, but the Duke team that won it all that year wasn't exactly chopped liver: Williams, Dunleavy, Battier, Boozer and James with Duhon coming off the bench.

Didn't Brown suit up for us for like 6 games? Or who was the highly touted center from Indian Hills that sucked for us for a couple of weeks early this decade?

Brown never made it to Ames.

Re: The ISU team that almost was

Is that the same year we should have had that Austrailian kid that the NCAA said was a pro and therefore ineligible?

His name might have been Bruton?

I know that year I was in grad school and friends with a couple of players and ex-player and they said coach at one point said the NCAA just crewed us out of a national title game with the eligibility decision on that one. Coach really thought he was the missing title piece.

Whoever said it is right - look how far we have fallen.

CJ Bruton would've been coming in for the 97-98 season.

I would always hear about these "great" players that we had locked down that never made it to campus. Always ****** me off.

Would have been an absolutely fantastic team. Brown would have been a stud as the collegiate level and even if he was just "really good," it would have made Fizer the most dominant player in CBB.

ESPN ran a story a year or two after our run saying that our 00-01 team very well might have been the favorite for a national title, or at least a final 4.
